Hi, recently my friend complained that her computer was having problems. Web searches were being redirected to spyware removal websites and performance was generally decreased. I have been using your site as a reference as I have been cleaning up her computer. She had run Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D as I had advised before I got her computer, with hundreds of results, and after removal she said on the next scan they would return. I have used HijackThis, Kaspersky online scanner, ComboFix, VundoFix, DSS, and her previously installed McAfee anti-virus, as well as Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D. I believe that I have removed all of the viruses and spyware on the machine, however I have seen several threads where you guys have identified things that I would not notice and I may have missed. Please look this over and advise me on what to do next, if anything. Let me know if you need me to run any scans. Unfortunately I deleted the logs for the scans that I did as I removed the infections they showed, but I will gladly run the scans again and post the logs. Sorry my post is so long, but like you guys said in the rules, you like to have as much information about what we have done when we post so you can help... Thank you very much.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS Brian :)

Please post a fresh Deckards log so we can see if there are any remnants other than what I can see in the HijackThis log.

Is the machine using Open DNS? If not, my guess is that Spybot created the following settings upon detecting a certain infection.

    O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222
    O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222
    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222

Check the Properties of the Network Connection>TCP/IP protocol properties, and set it to use Automatic IP and DNS Server addresses.

Thanks for the quick reply Dave. I have noticed that your forums are really good for getting to these quickly. I appreciate that.

I checked the TCP/IP configuration and it was already set as automatic for both the IP address and the DNS server.

Here is the fresh DSS log, thanks again:

Log looks good, Brian. If online and resident scanners all come up clean, you're basically done. Might want to clear past System Restore points and create a fresh one, then point your friend to this topic. :)

Alright, sounds good Dave. Thank you very much for taking your time to help. I will definitely pass on the link to my friend. Your website has been very useful to me and I appreciate the fact that all of you do this on your own time.

    Brian
