In Netscape 4.x, there was a dll called prefui32.dll that when removed from the system prevented a user from changing settings.

Does anyone know if or what the equivilant dll is in 6/7 to prevent users from changing the prefs.

This is going into a public area and I need to be able to set the prefs and then not have the users access them.

Making the prefs.js read only still allows the users to make changes for that session. It won't save the preferences, but they can do things like override proxy settings. Taking off the proxy setting here is not an option as the public access has to go through the proxy for access to the internet.

    Hi Brooks,

No, I haven't a clue how to accomplish the lockdown. However, I did find some information which may, or may not be useful:

    How do I lock prefs?

I understand that Communicator achieved this with the CCK in the netscape.cfg file. I've seen references to a mozilla.cfg file but don't know how to create one. Can anyone point me to the right information?
    Thanks in advance!

There is (will be?) a similar CCK tool available for Netscape 6. Preference locking is only supported via the .cfg file and you will need a tool such as the CCK tool to create this file.

To the best of my knowledge there is no CCK yet for Netscape 7. The below links may be useful:

    http://wp.netscape.com/eng/mozilla/ns6/CCKDocs/guide.html

    http://www.mozilla.org/projects/cck/

I'll get back to you if I find additional info.

Thanks for the links Ramona. They should come in handy.

I tried the 6.23 CCK, but it does not allow you to lock as much as the 4.76 version did. I am not certain why they did that.

Just to keep you posted on my quest for lockdown.

Well, I have found how to lock down the prefs that I don't want people to change.

It is in a very different location than in Netscape 4.x. The locaking down has to do with how Mozilla uses xul for showing prefs dialogs. (I studied up on this to see if I could figure it out).

There is a file called en-us.jar (note, this is the localized language file for Netscape/Mozilla)

Inside that file is where you can control the prefs for the browser. The file is basically a renamed .zip file, with a bunch of smaller files placed inside. What you have to do is delete out the specific files that correspond to the setting you don't want the person to have access to.

In this case, I was trying to lock in the proxy settings, so I removed the pref-proxies.dtd file from the archive. It now will display an error message when someone tries to look at the proxy settings. This also works with the other prefs settings.

    Hi Brooks,

Thanks for getting back to us with the solution for locking down your proxy setting!

You are a true "Geek ". Way to go!

    Ramona :D

P.S. I'm saving this one, as it is definitely out of my area of expertise. ;)
