Needed more space and bought a SATA drive, but can't get it to work. My MB has a place for 2 SATA drive, but it's not recognized. If I can get it to see it, can you clone a IDE to SATA and visa versa?

    It should work.
Plug in the new sata drive. Go to add-new hardware wizard in control panel. If windows fails to detect it then the bios settings may have the sata ports disabled. If windows detects it but cannot get it installed and ready to use then you may need to get the sata drivers from the drive manufacturer.

Almost ..... But, you'll do better if you look for SATA controller drivers on your motherboard mfg's web site.

Still having trouble getting the SATA HDD to be recognized. I use the disk that came with the MB and installed the RAID driver, but still have an yellow mark on it in the Device Manager. I have seen (during a repair windows or something) that ask if I wanted to install a 3rd party Raid. But don't know where or how to get to it. It may have been in a sfc /scannow, don't remember. Any Ideas will help.

One would expect that prompt to come up when doing a repair install but not when running sfc/scannow.

Thanks for the reply, but it looks hopeless.
I have managed to get the mobo drivers loaded by putting them on a floppy and starting up with windows CD hitting f6 at the prompt and going ahead and letting it run the basic windows files and taking the scsi files off of the floppy. After rebooting it told me to reboot for new hardware to take affect (that didn’t work). I found to go through the process and after booting back up to ignore the reboot and let the install new hardware find the HDD. Windows wouldn’t recognize it but Acronis Disk Director and Acronis True Image will. True Image will start to clone, but after running a few minutes it would reboot. Then I would have to install new partitions for windows to see it. After putting partitions back on it I can copy and past to it, but that’s all. I even tried to copy a partition and it did just like trying to clone did. Looks like I may have to get another IDE drive to back up to, but it looks like the SATA drives are the coming thing and may be a little faster. Would appreciate any help before buying another IDE drive.

    Thanks TonyT
I have the jumper on 1.5 on the hard drive. I tried it without it at first and never could see it. I’ve discovered that there are considerably newer bios and raid drivers. I feel like both could help, but I’m skid dish of the flashing the bios. The last time I tried it cost me a mobo. I’ve already downloaded the new raid driver, bios and a utility for loading the bios from Jetway here http://www.jetway.com.tw/jw/downloadshow.asp?downid=785&productid=PT880DAS. If I can find someone confident on flashing the bios, I’ll probably try that firs. I’m running without a backup and sure would like to get the SATA cloned.
Thanks again. It may be a while after tonight before I can get back on it steady, don’t give up on me.

I'm hoping the new bios and raid driver will be more accommodating.

The .tw site is too slow for me to check out, I'm impatient!
Anyway, if the bios update IS for your mb then no worries, try it.
Most bios update utils have a bios backup function built in, use it, just in case the update does not take well.

    Thanks,
I'm sure pondering it. It runs in Dos, so could I take my master HDD out before running it? Would like to be safe.

    Thanks TonyT
Things are working out. I ran window disk, hit F6 put new raid/SATA driver on floppy in and let it run till it ask if I wanted to start winds and I F3 out. Then I worriedly upgraded the bios. After that I check and the drive didn’t show in windows, but did in Acronis. So I tried to clone it and it work. So, it’s been cloned. Now I’m not sure which disk is booting up. They are identical. But have made it a long way.
    Thanks,
    Baldy
