Can bootpart be used when linux is over the 1024 cyl limit? It didn't look so.

I have used GRUB to boot a /boot partition that was way past the 1024 cylinder. New versions of LILO also don't have this problem.

And what about booting Win2K in a faraway region of the HD?

I have 3GB free about 12GB away from the beginning of the disk, I have a copy of W2K Professional and I'd love to try it on my Linux/Win98 laptop.

Microsoft OS's generally like to be close to the MBR to boot properly. The C drive should be within the first 4096MB of the hard drive. Otherwise you may have problems. You can probably get it to work, but from what I know about Microsoft OS's, you change one thing, (like install a service pack), and you can no longer boot.

Come on Eric, is there some wierd kernel, cluster, sector or what-ever reason for your reply to:

The C drive should be within the first 4096MB of the hard drive. Otherwise you may have problems.

That's very interesting and have never heard that and thought you'd explain it to us...:D

    thx

    Knuckles,

This is a support forum for fellow M$ sufferers.

The non-anointed experts CAN'T know all the details about the innards as said innards are closed source, copyrighted, secret, probably quite convoluted, if they do know they're sworn to secrecy, and this very obscurity is regarded as vital national (US, not mine) infrastructure by nobody less than the Alexis de Toqueville Institution (give or take the odd source theft by unidentified Russian hackers).
