I have recently purchased a new computer HP pavilion (Quad 4 processor etc...) Up until recently I was able to open both previously copied DVD's as well as Off the shelf DVD's. Now when I insert any new DVD I cannot get any program to recognize it. If I go to Windows explorer and select the DVD-RW drive it says insert disk and the door opens up. I have installed Nero8 and also have DVD decryptor, DVDFAB and a few other type programs installed. What could possibly be the reason for this? I am by no means a computer expert. I spent two hours on the phone with HP and they could not resolve the matter going thru the standard verify this and that junk that they are only trained to do (device manager, basic set-up features etc....) I read something that someone posted similar to my problem and "CODEC" was mentioned as a possible problem. What is a CODEC and could the lack of one be my problem. Oh yea, I can open up and play Audio CD's and previously burned DVD movies. It is just the New DVD's that will not open. I have tried more than 8 of them and nothing happens.

    Thank you for the help,

You state you can play "previously burned DVD's ", it would appear you have the correct codec. If these are just the new burns, possible you ran into a batch of low quality disc's. This latter issue is a major problem in the industry. You will need to check the MID code of your blank DVD supply. Load Nero InfoTool and choose "Disc" tab. With a blank DVD in your player, what information is on line "Manufacture ID.
The above views are from Nero 6, hopefully they are similar to Nero 8.

what does that mean? Why would it matter what the MID code on blank DVD supply. I cant open up new movies from Blockbuster. The only thing I can open it is old burned movies. How would that effect new movies that windows explorer does not even detect. When old burned movies are in the drive I can see the files under explorer. When new movie is in the drive it says load disc. It does not see any files with new movie

I'm sorry I misunderstood your problem. Your above quote stated you could read/play "Previous Burns ", then 5 words later (quote in Red) you stated "New DVD's" will not play. Sorry I took that phrase as "New DVD Burns" will not play.
    Good Luck

I have the feeling that your new burner can not read the new DVD's because of the security code that they have encrypted.
Can you get hold of a different burner and install to try.

Has anyone thought...DVD vs. DVX? Older players/burners will not read/play DVX disks. Even the speed counts.

    Time to make a purchase

This sounds a lot like an older DVD player not being able to read newer DVDs...
