    Hello.

    Hope someone can help.

I have two PC's on a home network connected wirelessly through a Netgear Router using Sky as the ISP.

My main PC has Windows Vista Ultimate on it, the other Windows XP Pro.
They both belong to the same workgroup 'Home', and can see each other on the network. The XP machine can access the Vista machine and view folders etc, however the Vista machine gets the error message

"//machinename is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Acess is denied ".

I have read many many threads from people having a similar problem, and have attempted all mentioned solutions:

    1. Looked into the local security policy settings for 'access this computer from the network' in Administrative Tools. I have tried to add my computer name into the 'add user' window but get the message 'failed to save to local policy datebase' - it seems many have this issue. I also do not see this as the cause as the other machine doesn't have my comuter in the user groups but still gains access.

    2. Changed the 'restrictanonymous' value to '0' in regedit. (This was originally set to '2' but still had no joy after the change).

    3. Added a user account onto the XP machine with the same user name as the Vista machine.

    4. Turned the guest account on in XP.

    5. Made sure 'file and printer sharing' was enabled in Network connection properties on both machines.

    6. Turned off password protected sharing

    7. Enabled all related options under 'sharing and discovery'

I am at a loss to what is the cause.

Any help will be much appreciated.. WINDOWS MUST NOT WIN!

That’s kinda a generic msg n can mean many things.
Assume you’ve done all the usual.
Try this "“ start- run "“ cmd "“ type: net session.
(type net ? for other commands)
Count how many connections are being made.
1 thing that does NOT show up "“ but counts "“ is shared local printers so unshare any local printers that don’t need networked.

Went nuts once on a small network troubleshooting that.

I have same problem trying to sort out my local volunteer centre with their five PC's connected on a wired network, all running XP and all can see each others files and share them apart from one which although the others can see its files if they try and open them they get the same message as you "You might not have permissions to use this network" etc. I have tried all the things you have and also run the Network Wizard which allows you to set file and printer sharing, all to no avail. So I watch this thread with hope someone has a solution as it seems a common problem.
    Regards Paul

    WOW! I’m kinda stumped.
If there I’d do the usual. An ipconfig/all too make sure 1st 3 octets of IP numbers match.
    Disable all firewalls.
If you have both wired n wireless pay attention to ip numbers on both.
Then just for hell of it "“ turn on DHCP in router n have computers get local IP’s automatically. Re-check IP numbers.

Next exotic thing "“ worked once n have no idea why "“ unshare any directories n then reshare them. No idea why that worked. But spent 12 hours running that 1 down.
