When at home I usually hook my laptop to an external monitor. QUESTION: Is it aboslutely necessary to turn OFF the laptop BEFORE disconnecting the monitor from laptop? I've never disconnected monitor before laptop powers off (as I'm afraid it my cause some damage) so I don't know what will happen.

When in doubt - shut down. (whic is what I would do)
Bare minimum - pull the power cord to the external first....

Looks like I'll stick with powering off the laptop first. Thanks.

    It is not required...

...to turn off the laptop before disconnting your monitor. Think about people who connect/disconnect projectors during a presentation. It is not required.
