I just attempted to log on to a web site that I've never had a problem with.

It said the browser I am using wasn't configured correctly or something along that line. I checked the Java settings and the cookies in Tools/Options but don't see anything strange. Of course I wouldn't know if anything was strange because I've never had to fool with that area.

The message pertained to Java and Cookies and that's why I proceeded to check those areas out.

    Any ideas?

    Pat,

Give us a link for that site, if you would please.

Have you tried adding the site to your "Exceptions" list in Cookies?

    Tools | Options | Privacy | Cookies
    Click on the "Exceptions" Tab
Add the link for the site in the blank field

    Now try the site.

    Ramona,

It's for Excite.com. I have an email account there that I keep cleaned out. Don't really use it for much except to divert junk.

I think I did what you suggested but will take another look.

I just tried to access it from another computer and it worked just fine.

    Ramona,

Doubt that you wanted to see all of this but here it is. I did what you suggested and that didn't seem to do anything.

Would Spybot, Zone Alarm or AVG stop me from accessing the site? I'm sure that this was not a problem in the past few weeks. I clean the mailbox at least once a week.

The browser you're using is not allowing you to sign in to Excite.

Right now, your browser's settings are configured to disable cookies and/or javascript. In order to access your account, you must change your browser's settings to accept both cookies AND javascript.

NOTE: You will also receive this error if you computer system time is off by more than a few hours, or is set to an incorrect day or year. To check your system time on your computer, please double-click the date and time in the bottom right of your screen, and confirm it is set correctly.

How do I change my browser settings?
This depends on the browser you're using. If you are getting a message asking if you want to accept cookies, choose Yes. Otherwise, we recommend that you click the "Help" button at the top of your browser in order to learn how to properly accept cookies and javascript. (You'll most likely be able to enable these settings by locating the Security and/or Privacy tabs found within "Internet Options" in your browser's "Tools" pull-down window.)

Tip: If you are using the same browser that came installed on your computer when you bought it - and if you've owned your computer for a couple of years - we recommend that you download the latest version. Internet Explorer users, click here. Netscape users, click here.

Tried everything and still can't sign in? It could be due to one of these issues:

    * Your computer's clock may be set ahead 10 years or more. Your clock may be showing the correct time of day, but is it set to the right year? Believe it or not, this has prevented some Excite users from being able to sign in.

    * Your computer's hard drive (C:, most likely) has low disk space. If your computer's operating system uses Windows, and if your hard drive is nearly full, this may prevent you from being able to sign in to your account. You may want to delete some old files or move a number of your files to another drive on your computer.

    * Your computer/computer's network is using security software or a firewall that prevents you from signing in. Some security software and firewalls use settings that make it impossible to sign in to an Excite email account. These settings can be changed, so please check with your network administrator or call the security software maker if you believe this may be true in your case.

Did you try to access that site from Safe Mode with Networking?

    Pat,

Did your PC do an automatic update for daylight savings time?

Have you tried disabling ZA, your Antivirus, etc., one by one, to see if any could be the culprit?

Safe Mode is a good suggestion too...

    Of course I tried IE.<G>

I've learned that some sites will only work in IE. But I've always opened my Excite mail using Firefox. I'll try disabling a few things and then do the Safe Mode deal.

    Thanks.

    Well, none that worked.

In fact in booting into Safe Mode with Networking which I have done before, didn't work for some reason.

I tried to diagnose the problem but received a message that it couldn't be diagnosed until I restarted my PC.

Of course now it is working fine except I can't get into Excite mail again.

And I could not enable it. I KNOW I've done it before.

Try that Safe Mode again. Maybe the fact, that you can't get into safe Mode is giving us some hint.

It's a shot in the dark, but since it won't break anything....

Download, install, and run LSP-Fix: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
Restart computer, and see, if it helped.
    If not...
Download, install, and run WinSock XP Fix: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html
    Restart computer, and check again.

    P. S. I've seen a lot of posting about very same problem, but not solution, yet.
    Latest Windows updates?

I'm using Vista Home Premium. Does that make a difference?

    LSP- Fix is OK.
    Restart computer afterwards.
