    Hi, Welcome to WindowsBBS.

    Try this:

    1. Open a command prompt: go to Start > Run and type cmd in the Open box, click OK
    2. Stop Automatic Update Service; type Net stop wuauserv (press Enter) .
    3. Type rd /S %Windir%\SoftwareDistribution. This will delete the %Windir%\SoftwareDistribution folder. Type Y to confirm.
    4. Type Net start wuauserv (hit Enter) to start the Automatic Update Service. Close the command prompt.
    5. Force a Windows Update detection and see if that works.

    Thank you for the information!

"Have you recently made a repair install of Windows?"
Yes, I had a Vundo Trojan but before I knew, I did the repair install. I don't if it was the virus or the repair install that caused the problem. However, I was able to fix the automatic updates problem using the following from another forum listed below:

    http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsupdate/browse_thread/thread/20581c2030685bfc

    This is what I followed:

"Cut and paste this into notepad:

    regsvr32.exe iuengine.dll
    regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
    regsvr32.exe wuaueng1.dll
    regsvr32.exe wuauserv.dll
    regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
    regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
    regsvr32.exe wups.dll
    regsvr32.exe wuweb.dll
    regsvr32.exe wups2.dll
    regsvr32.exe cdm.dll
    regsvr32.exe msxml2r.dll
    regsvr32.exe msxml3r.dll
    regsvr32.exe msxml.dll
    regsvr32.exe msxml3.dll
    regsvr32.exe msxmlr.dll
    regsvr32.exe msxml2.dll
    regsvr32.exe qmgr.dll
    regsvr32 softpub.dll
    regsvr32 wintrust.dll
    regsvr32 initpki.dll
    regsvr32 dssenh.dll
    regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
    regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
    regsvr32 sccbase.dll
    regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
    regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

    Now click on File
    Click on Save As
    (dialogue box appears)
At the bottom do the drop down in Save as Type as ALL FILES

In File Name box name it Winupdatefix.bat
Save it to your desktop (for ease of finding it)

it will appear as a ms-dos batch file.
    double click
press enter after each confirmation. if it says it is missing a file or
cannot re-register don't worry. Note: initpki.dll will seem to hang, it
just takes less than a minute comapred to the others (that are almost
    instant). "
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Hopefully, this was correct information as it is working now. If there is something else I need to do, that information would be appreciated!!!

The reason for this question you have already discovered. If you had answered in the affirmative I intended pointing you to .....

Stealth Windows update prevents XP repair from Windows Secrets.

Your reference is for Windows Defender, but no doubt contains the files listed in the URL above.

Bad news for me - it didn't work!

    Hello, Everybody !

I have the same/similar problem with Windows/Microsoft updates NOT installing following a Windows XP Repair-Reinstall.

Unfortunately NONE of the "fixes" have worked for me. :(

I'll start a new thread/topic (or whatever it's called) and see if I can bundle up 4 full days of frustration into a single (hopefully understandable post. ;)

    Good Luck, Everybody !

Been There. Done That. Didn't Work...

    Hi, Pete !

    Thank You for your reply!

    Unfortunately...

    Been There... 7 Times.
    Done That... 7 Times.
    Didn't Work... 7 Times.

[ NOTE : After reading your reply I gave it one more try. The end result was that the Windows Update Agent said that the update was not needed as it was already installed on my computer. Curiously, though, it does NOT show up on the Add/Remove Programs list (with "Include Updates" checked). ]

Although my computer now has an assortment of "ailments ", the main one over the past five days has been the totally unsolvable Windows/Microsoft Update Error 0x8DDD0007. (The constant call for "re-booting" the computer).

Which calls for a new thread, don't you think?

    YIKES !!!

Not really - critical updates can often not be uninstalled and will not show in Add/Remove Programs.

To check which updates you are missing run Secunia Software Inspector or to see those that you have use Belarc Advisor.

Belarc says... (Drum Roll, Please...) 97 Critical Updates NOT installed !

    Hi, Pete !

I updated and ran the BelArc Adviser yesterday and it said that there are (were) 97 CRITICAL Updates that needed to be installed !!!

    I didn't think about checking for KB922582-x86-ENU.exe.

I'll go check the list right now.

BelArc shows that KB922582-x86-ENU.exe IS, indeed, installed !

So, there's still the need to start a new thread, eh ?
