WinXP on a Dell 4300. Can't boot up. It goes to black & white screen with options to boot to safe-mode, last good boot, etc. Safe mode brings up a long list of commands, none of which make sense to me. "Last Good..." and "Open normally" just take you around again. Just B4 it goes to the XP screen, a Blue-Screen of Death appears for a micro-second. So fast I can't read it. Finally it goes to the blk & why screen. Any suggestions?

Those are the drivers, etc loading - if you wait a couple of minutes (normal) does it boot into Safe Mode?

Did you try to repair from recovery console yet. Boot with XP CD and when press option R, which is for repair corrupted OS, the select windows Dir, which is usaully 1 (if you do not doual boot). It will ask you admin password, make sure it is recovery admin password, if you do not know the password, hit enter with out typeing anything. Let me know if it will take you next step. If you are not able to log into windows recovery consol, then you must have ERD Commander (very expensive piece of software, get a copy from your friend or) and boot your pc with it and restore to a back date.
    Hopefuly you be ok.;)

And has that made any difference - I guess not as you have not posted to that effect.

I think a repair install is your best option here ....

payendo - Welcome to the Board :)
You cannot do that - read the URL in my post above for the correct sequence - it is the second repair option which must be selected.

    Huzzah !!!

Pete, that last bit of advice (Post # 6) actually worked like a charm, only I didn't know it! When it got to the c-prompt I just left it & went on to work. When I got home, I read your final post (#7). I re-booted the pc and SHAZAM!!! I got it all back. Needless to say, I'm presently doing a complete system AV scan. Thanks for all your help... BTW, in W98 one could make a "Boot-Disk ". Can one be made in XP, or is it necessary at all? Regards.

Good news - chkdsk and other Recovery Console commands leave you at the C prompt - you need to reboot to fire up Windows :)
    Yes, but with limitations ....

How to create a bootable floppy disk for an NTFS or FAT partition in Windows XP

If you have an installation CD you have access to the Recovery Console as you now know

Other boot disk options including bootable CD here ....

    http://www.bootdisk.com

The ultimate is BartPE - read about it here .....

My friend, do the following and U be fine, trust me,

Boot with recovery option and change to c: dirive, like

c:\windows> cd.. (hit enter) you will be at
C:\> (then give the following commands)

    C:\>ATTRIB -H C:BOOT.INI
    C:\>ATTRIB -R C:BOOT.INI
    C:\>ATTRIB -S C:BOOT.INI
    C:\DEL BOOT.INI

THEN GIVE THIS COMMAND it will rebuilt Boot.ini and other system settings.
    C:BOOTCFG /REBUILD

It will scan all hard drives, and will say scan successful.

Very imortent, do the following 2 things when the scan process finish,
Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No?All): Y
1-Enter Load Identifire: Windows XP Home Edition
    2-Enter OS Load options: /fastdetect

Then run CHKDSK /R , CHKDSK /F also give the following command,
C:\>FIXBOOT if it ask you yes or No, just hit Y.
You will be back in windows my friends.:cool:
