I have been looking into new computers because mine died. I was considering getting a intel quad core computer then some one asked if I really needed that much power when most programs barely use more than a single core let alone a dual core. So I was thinking I should just go with a dual core chip with the best graphics card I can get. The things is I have been doing a lot of reading and I wanted to find out which of the dual cores are the best for intel and for amd. Then from those chips which is considered the fastest and best for games movies and music.

as a side note anyone have and good recommendation for a great website to build a computer to compare to dell and such.

    thanks as always.

My friends son wanted a new gaming computer and asked me to build one for him. He didn't want me to spend all of his money which made it a budget build (kind of). Prices for AMD processors are lower than for Intel processors and when comparing processors in the same price range, AMD is the better option but if you are willing to spend more money, Intel will outperform AMD.

My choice was the AMD Athlon64 X2 Dual-Core 5600+ for socket AM2. It's an 89W design compared to the 6000+ and 6400+ which are 125W designs and probably run hotter (you need better cooling) which is why I didn't choose one of those. In the same price range (in Sweden) and slightly above, the Intel E4500/E4600/E6400/E6550 were compared at Tom's Hardware and the only contest was the E6550 but it was more expensive.

I spent more money on the video card instead, the GeForce 8800GT (512MB).

    The kid is happy!

Intel's Core 2 Duo processors offer better performance than AMD's processors and they overclock better as well. Power consumption is equal: AMD processors require less power in idle, while Intel's CPUs are more efficient under load.

I got an Athlon 64 X2 4200 back in the day that AMD was king (some 3-4 years ago), but unfortunately AMD isn't competitive at this time.

thank you for the great info. I would rather spend a bit more for a better core so looks like I am going for a intel duo 2. Is there one that shines I know there are number of models.
