    hi
i have recently changed my connection to wireless ( netgear dg834gt ) i have both my computors set to wireless conection but due to interferance in the evening i lose connection on my main comp so i moved the wireless router close to the main comp and re-connected the ethernet cable between the 2 , but the connection doesnt work and i dont know how to make the comp use the cable rather than the wireless .
would it be possible for you to walk me through the process

    Hi Wayne,

It should be as easy as opening your Network Connections, right click the wireless connection icon and select Disable, right click the wired connection (usually named Local Area Connection) and select Enable. If you want to see the icon for the connection next to the clock on your taskbar, right click and select Properties, then check the option to Show icon in notification area when connected.

hi i've opened my network connections and i dont have a "local area connection " i have 2 sections the first "BROADBAND " this has in it

    a)broadband connection-disconnected,firewalled,wan miniport(pppoe)
b)talktalk.net-disconnected,firewalled,wan miniport (pppoe) both of these when clicked upon try to connect via dial up.

the second section "LAN or high speed internet" in this section
    wireless network connection 1 connected,firewalled netgear wg111t 108mbs...

is there a way to get back the local area connection?

Click Start>Run and type devmgmt.msc then hit enter to open the Device Manager. Check the listing Network adapters for errors (marked with yellow exclamation), and by double clicking any device shown under it to view it's properties. Let us know what you find there.

Also, most ethernet cards light up (usually a green light) when the cable is connected. Does yours have a light and is it lit?

Click Start>Run and type devmgmt.msc ...this shows no exclamation marks, all looks ok.
i cant see any green lights on the back where i plug the ethernet cable into, unfortuately i cant easily open the computor to look in side so dont know if there is a light within.

No need to open the case at this time. When you open the Device Manager and expand the Network Adapters entry, what is listed there?

Please highlight and copy the contents of the code box below.

    Code:

    reg query HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network /s |findstr /i "connection descriptions "> "%userprofile%\desktop\adapters.txt "
    exit
    cls

Click Start>Run and type cmd then hit enter to open a command window. Right click in the window and Paste the copied text. The command window will close on it's own. Post the contents of the adapters.txt log created on your desktop.

Based on what you see listed in Device Manager, it sounds as though the ethernet device is no longer being detected. The results of the log show that a new connection has been made several times, though it's unclear what device it's actually for, based on your description of what happens when you enable it. Lets use a tool I made to gather a bit more information. Please download NetworkAdapterInfo and save it to your desktop. Double click the file to run it. When it completes, it will open a log. Please post the contents of that log.

As I thought, the NIC is not being recognized by the system, despite being lit green. Is that an add-on card (PCI or AGP) or built into the motherboard? Generally, you can tell by it's location. If built-in, it will be grouped along with usb, monitor and printer connections. If PCI or AGP, it will be down lower and in a slot by itself, the same as a modem would be.

If built-in, you may as well shop for an add-on card. They are rather inexpensive. If it's an add-on, shut down and open the case then remove the card. Clean the contact (where it attaches) with a pencil eraser then put it back in. If detected, it should now be visible in the device manager. If not, shop for a replacement.

The above may be contradicted by someone with other ideas, which is fine, and welcomed (I'm no hardware guru :p ).
