After I log on to windows xp I get this message: Windows cannot find "newse.exe" Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button and then click search. can you help?

    Hi bravoy2k
    Welcome to the boards!

Perhaps take a gander for it under msconfig and your start up tab? If it's there.....uncheck it.

Maybe time for a recent and updated virus scan as well?
Perhaps just use a free online scanner such as:
    Grisoft
    Housecall
    Panda
    Symantec

Do try perhaps housecall? (One of the links I posted above) I know it sounds redundant, but virus scanners have been known to miss things.
Any chance you HAVE had a recent virus lately that McAfee tried to clear up for you?

    Maybe not a virus...

Perhaps your problem isn't (wasn't) a virus, but some kind of "spyware" parasite, worm or backdoor, that was unintentionally deleted, or that failed to auto-install properly when you visited some web page.

Try to clean it with "Ad-Aware ", an excellent spyware removal tool. Download it from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/index.html

Also, try to update your current antivirus. If yours is more than 1 month old, then it will surely miss A LOT of recent viruses. In my network, I force my users to update each 2 or 3 weeks maximum.

    Good luck.

jmmf - these days, a daily update is probably the best idea.

I scanned. I updated. I scanned again. No viruses. I guess I'm stuck with that annoying window. Thank you all. But I'll try anything else but another scan:)

How be for grins and giggles you try the .exe fix?

Search your registry for newse.exe. I believe that is where it is being called from as a startup.

Mark is very probably correct. You'll find some pointers as to where to look for the entry here.
