    Members---

The problem: I can't download the current Adobe Reader. Just prior to completing the download, I get this notice:

'The older version of Adobe Reader 8.1.2 cannot be removed. "

Does this make sense? How can I already have on my computer the version I'm attempting to download???

I've tried MSCONFIG, FIND & SEARCH, and UNINSTALL programs. Nothing works.

I've downloaded PDF995, but it doesn't read financial graphs, etc.

Help!!! I need the current Reader.

    Thanks to All.

Hi, geokay. Welcome to Windows BBS! :)

Some people suggest Foxit Reader as an alternative to Adobe's Reader. (I have never used Foxit Reader so I cannot provide any opinions about it.)

In regards to removing Adobe's Reader, perhaps the following link will help.

CAUTION: The Adobe instructions I linked involve editing your registry which can be potentially dangerous. You might render your computer unstable or even unbootable. Before you edit/clean/repair your registry with any method, be sure you make a backup of your registry and you know how to access and use that backup in case you muck up your computer.

If you decide to manually edit your registry, then be sure you are comfortable with editing the registry and I suggest you save a backup of at least the keys you edit ahead of time in case you need/want to reverse your changes. Editing the registry can produce serious undesirable consequences if done incorrectly.

In any case, you should know ahead of time how to restore your original registry settings and prepare to do so in case the need arises.

I also suggest you create a System Restore point before making any changes (regardless of what method you use). System Restore may be accessed as follows.
    • Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
    ==========

After manually removing Adobe Reader from your system and restarting your computer, perhaps you can successfully download and install Adobe Reader from this link.

Here is a PM I received from geokay. There does not appear (to me) to be anything in the message that is sensitive/private so I am sharing here so anyone else who reads this thread may benefit.

You're very welcome! :) I'm glad my suggestion worked for you...and thanks for following up.

I have been using Foxit for a few years now. Adobe is such bloatware...
