When I click Help on my Start menu, it can't load its usual page and I get a pop-up alert saying "Symantec Script Blocking has prevented a script action that could be harmful to you. "

I can find no program currently running, even using ProcView to look at all resident programs, that seems like it would cause that. Is it perhaps buried in some system program?

I tried to re-download a Windows ME Help update from Windows Update, and that same message prevented some things from getting installed upon installation of the new download.

    Any ideas ? Thanks.

Since you didn't say what version of Symantec you are using, go to Google and use symantec script blocking as your search terms. The first page of hits will have detailed instructions for disabling this in both 2001 & 2002.

I don't currently have any Norton products running. That's what puzzles me. Haven't used one in many months.

I found a script block folder under Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared and nearly deleted it. Since something was loading the script blocker, even though I couldn't see it in ProcView or in the Task Window, I had to reboot in Safe Mode and then go to DOS and delete the .dll that was loaded before.

I was able to get the Help function working by using Add/Remove Programs to reinstall I.E. 6 over itself.

Now, however, when I go to Windows Update, I see "Done" in my Status Bar but the page doen't load. So I can't update Windows ME. Any ideas on that?

Whay did you mean by, "I don't currently have any Norton products running. That's what puzzles me. Haven't used one in many months." If you didn't uninstall the program then here are instructions for both NAV2001 and 2002 (from Symantec's Knowledge Base):

    1. Start Norton AntiVirus.
    2. Click Options. If a menu appears when you click Options, then click Norton AntiVirus. The Norton AntiVirus Options dialog box appears.
    3. Click Script Blocking.
    4. Uncheck Enable Script Blocking (recommended).
    5. Click OK.

However now that you deleted a .dll file it may complicate matters.
What was the name of the file you deleted? Did you save a copy of the file in a backup location?

Here is a page on WindowsUpdate problems and solutions (look towards the bottom of the page for a summary of solutions)
