    Chuck,

That message "The "process" is the program trying to read/write the index file (MSF) when you open the mail client, when you access a mail folder, download new messages, etc. If it's corrupt, that can be the cause of the endless processing.

    Do this:
    Close Thunderbird
    Open Windows Explorer
Navigate to your Profiles Folder Location
Open the Mail Account folder and delete all files with an "MSF" extension.
Do not delete files without "MSF" extensions, as these files contain your mail.

The MSF files are located here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\profilename\Mail\mail.yourISP.net

Let us know if this helps.

    Chuck,

Don't be ashamed, and you missed the last line of my post. I gave you the location of your Mail Account folder, which is a subfolder of the Profiles folder:

    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\profilename\Mail\mail.yourISP.net

    Chuck,

Are the files located in your Mail Account folder? If so, then delete them.

You still need to open your Mail Account folder and ensure that all MSF files are gone.

    Chuck,

    For Vista: C:\Users\username\Application Data\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\<Profile name>
You may have to unhide your files, as in Windows XP:

On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
    Click the View tab
Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders
Disable "Hide File Extensions for Known Files. "
    Click OK.

To search for files in the Application Data folder, go to Start | Search.
Under More Advanced Options select Search system folders, Search
Hidden Files and folders, and Search subfolders.

    thunderbird problems (persisting)

    Ramona:

Sorry, but I'm going to have to give up. Your excellent adyou said to delete. And navigating thru the BB is itself awkward and non-intuitive, requiring alll sorts of re-logging, etc.

The designated paths don't obviously exist in Vista. As much as I'd hate it, I may have to revert to Windows Mail, unless Mozilla comes out with a well-justified patch. I note that this problem is quite prevalent.

FYI, i also learned that one can't uninstall IE, due to Microsoft lockups!

    Thanks very much (sincerely!).

    Chuck,

You may have to unhide your files, as in Windows XP:[/QUOTE]
I don't think that Ramona has Vista, and, I would not get it, if they paid me.
I don't see any reason for a patch. But, I am more at ease, creating a new profile, and placing it in an unhidden location.
I don't think that the Mozilla product is to blame.
From the TB website , I see this path:
, which is different from what Ramona gave.(she has: C:\Users\\, meaning that something was not entered)
You may have to unhide your files, as in Windows XP.

Oops! Sorry about that, but I have corrected it in the above post. As Westside shows it is:

    C:\Users\username\Application Data\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles

Seeing your hidden files and system files in Vista is not much different than in XP. Here are the step-by-step directions:

Click the round blue Start icon in the left corner
    Click Control Panel
    Click Folder Options
    Click the View tab
Click Show hidden files and folders

If you want to see system files as well, disable Hide protected operating system files
    Click OK
