I originally posted this question on a thread titled: Periodic "Freezeup" Problem started by dkline. It appears my problem is not related to his so I started this thread.

The problem: When I leave my computer on overnight I lose my DSL connection. I haven't been successful in finding a way to restore it other than to reboot the system. I have roadrunner cable service via a cable modem. The indicators on the modem are all green. The problem rarely happens during the day although it has on occasion but you can count on the problem occuring overnight.

Miz offered a possible solution of entering IPCONFIG /RENEW in the run command. I was checking a job about 1AM and found the internet connection dead and tried the IPCONFIG command but could not get the connection restored.

I also tried IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS and .../RENEW with no success.

Other than losing the DSL connection everthing else seems to be working OK.

I am reluctant to contact the roadrunner help folks as they seem to be dumber than ...... well, not very technically oriented, i.e. they just read scripts.

I'm open for suggestions on troubleshooting this nag.

    Thanks :)

Er - cable or DSL? I think RoadRunner only does cable and the Telco would do DSL.

Very possibly a signal problem to your house. Cable modem service is much more sensitive than the TV part and can easily go out on you. If you tend to have any fuzzy picture on the very lowest channels on the TV, that is almost certainly the issue.

I would call the cable folks and suggest they send a hardware tech to your house to check their equipment. That can often give a solution when they replace one of the many pieces involved in their service. Probably not the modem either BTW. The timing of the thing really would make me suspicious.

The other option may be to do what I finally did after 5 months of problems and 14 service calls that didn't fix the problem and that was to switch from cable to DSL. Not as fast but it runs.

    Cable or DSL?

If I had only paid attention when I was in school I sure would be a lot smarter now than, well, than I am. Now I just assumed a cable hook-up was digital. We all know what assume does for ones ego right?

I didn't ever stop to think about why I have a "modem" and what a modem does. I have researched a bit and found a great place to explain what is what (here).

So I'm here to tell you I have a cable connection and NOT a DSL connection as I previously stated and I now know the difference in great detail..... thanks for the kick in the butt Newt:D

    RESOLVED... I think

Miss 'puter has been running AND the internet connection has also been uninterupted since I rebooted on Saturday morning (I'm writing this Monday morning).

This is good! And even better I know what I changed that apparently was causing the problem.

I'm running XP Home and I also have Zone Alarm installed as my firewall. One of the options in ZA is called the Automatic Lock. This lock, when activated, locks communication both in and out of the computer except for specific applications that the user has specified as being authorized to "pass-lock. "

When Mr. Newt suggested I have my cable connection checked it occured to me that I was basically disabling the connection with the ZA lock. I said to myself, "Self, it doesn't hurt to try." (My shrink says it's OK to talk to yourself so long as you don't say "What? ") I turned off the Automatic Lock and have been connected now for about 48 continous hours:D

Jim - very glad you got things fixed.

And while talking to yourself may be fine, I've gotten into a habit of emailing myself and I am sorta starting to worry.
