    Hello all,

I am having a similar problem to a recent poster "judyfz" but have been unable to get things back to normal. I use a dial up connection. I woke up this morning, turned on my computer and opened Netscape "SeaMonkey with Mozilla 1.0.4" as usual to check my email.

My in box showed approximately 47 new mails in the total column but only 5 new mails were actually showing. When I clicked on one of the emails it opened in a blank page with only the subject title at the very top. This was true for the remainder of the emails that were visible. I found that the emails that had been left from before in the trash would open normally to show the contents. I thought I would move one of the received emails to the trash to see if it would open there. I could not move the received email to the trash. I would instead get this alert. “Unable to delete messages in folder Inbox because it is in use by some other operation. Please wait for that operation to finish and then try again.†The progress bar at the bottom has been active for quite awhile without making any progress. I just noticed during this attempt to move the message to the trash that the total for the trash would increase by one but the message remained in the inbox folder but did not show up in the trash.

Also when I click -Get Messages-I receive this alert “This folder is being processed. Please wait until processing is complete to get messages.†**** At the bottom above the task bar it shows - Connect: Host contacted, sending login information.- This also goes on and on without anything happening. This seems to only affect my Inbox and my Trash folders. The rest of my folders open normally and I can read the messages as usual.

I followed the suggestions by Romona and Westside where it seemed applicable. I have checked all my settings for my mail account and nothing has changed that I can determine. Server and Settings are correct and the SMTP is correct. I have rebooted and reconnected to my server without any change. I opened my mail account and scrolled down to the Inbox folder. It contained 376,995 KB. I opened it using note pad. The oldest date is May of 2007. Have no idea why it goes back that far in time. I keep my in box folder empty most of the time. The last message listed is a spam that was delivered Feb 22 6:25 am but nothing after that. The five messages currently in my inbox that can’t be opened are dated Feb 21 and 22. The most recent message is dated Feb 22, 2:13 PM In the note pad view I am assuming these are sorted oldest at the top and newest at the bottom of the listing. I even tried the Find in the notepad listings for a keyword from one of the five emails in the Inbox folder and nothing showed up.

Could this be a server problem or is something amiss locally? Is there a way to retrieve the information in these emails that are blank and get everything back to the way it was?

I just reread this and it is hard to follow. I hope you can shed some light on this problem.

Note: **** The progress bar has stopped at this point.

I just had a thought, I may not receive email notification that there is a reply to this question.

    Thanks for any help.

    In first place what is
? It cannot be three different programs, but 1.0.4 is old.
And, as I suggested to Judy, you should File|Compact your folders, while in Mail. If you see such a large Inbox file, but have only a few e-mails in View, you may have not compacted the folder, or are looking at the wrong folder. As in Judy's case, do you have more than one account folder on the hard drive?
Did you delete the Inbox.msf, with your program closed?
Have you checked your mail at the ISP website? That would not be affected by what's going on .
And, in spite of the extensive e-mail, I have more questions that you could think. But, first start by telling us which program you use. Then, absolutely, no using of the same profile for more than one program. In other words, if you have Netscape6/7, Mozilla, and Seamonkey, and use each of them with a single profile you have messed up.
    Waiting for more details.

    Hi Westside and Romona,

So far so good. I did delete all the MSF files in my mail folder which got everything back working.

Westside, in answer to your program question I guess I was a bit in the dark as to the relationship of Netscape to SeaMonkey. I always thought they were the same except that SeaMonkey was an updated version of NS. I now know that NS has since been abandoned by AOL. Upon further review I now see that Mozilla is acutally a foundation which is refered to as SeaMonkey. So I guess I should have said I am running SeaMonkey version 1.0.4 Sorry for my confusion.

Yes I only use one email account. SeaMonkey is my only browser.

Thank you Westside and Romona for the quick replys and the help.

For the future, how do I compact the folders?

    troof,

To compact your folder, when in Mail & newsgroups, click on File | Compact folders.

Give some thought to updating to SeaMonkey 1.1.8, which can be downloaded here: http://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/

This will have no effect on your Profile whatsoever. To install:

Uninstall 1.0.4 using the Add/Remove Programs

    Delete the C:\Program Files\SeaMonkey folder
If you have plugins installed, save the plugins folder before deleting the program folder

    Now reboot your PC

    Next: Install SeaMonkey 1.1.8

Let us know if you have further questions.

    Thanks Romona,

That was easy. Will follow your advise and update SeaMonkey.

    Over and out.

    troof,

I almost forgot that there is another setting in SeaMonkey which will allow a prompt to Compact your folders when they are larger than a selected size. The setting is here: Edit | Preferences | Mail & Newsgroups | Offline & Disk Space
Compact folder when it will save over ___ KB.

    troof,
it has been a long story from Netscape7.2, the last Suite of Browser, Mail, etc., and Mozilla upon which Netscape7.x was built, and finally Seamonkey, which is being developed by a small group which want to continue the Suite tradition. Take a look at Seamonkey page . You will see that the present version is 1.1.8, so a lot happened since you got your Seamonkey.
I am using the prefbar which brings up a variety of buttons, and allows one to entire a bunch of links, aside the personal toolbar.
Clear Cache is one of the options, but Ramona's suggestion is the only handy one for mail.

    Westside,

I have never used IE ever. I started using Netscape so long ago I can't remember when. I was turned on to SeaMonkey by Romona when I had a problem using Netscape back in the 1.0.4. days of SeaMonkey. I am so used to the format I hope SeaMonkey has a very long life. Thanks for the link. Many more to be found on Google. Interesting reading.
