    Add Remove Programs

You use Add-Remove programs. There are several IE7 security programs. As IE7 was usually installed via Microsofts Update. I dont know if you are using XP or Vista. But if I had uninstalled Microsofts IE7 the system reverts back to IE6.You still have IE6 on the machine.

Microsofts site,if you query IE7 you will find the instructions for Unistalling IE7. Its at the bottom of one of their FAQ pages. Making it difficult to find.

If you look in Add/Remove programs (Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs),Check "Show Updates ",you should see several entries pertaining to Internet Explorer 7.

There are several options there.Repair,or Remove. I haven't tried to remove Internet Explorer 6.

You might hold on and wait for one of the BB personalities to come on with some more information. As I am just browsing here. Good Luck. [ ]

whr - Welcome to the Board :)
It would help if you padded out your post a little - even if only to say 'How do I ....' and quote your OS too.

KaleidiScope has pointed you in the right direction for XP - Add/Remove Programs will roll you back to IE 6 - look for Windows Internet Explorer 7.

If you are running Vista an uninstall is not possible.

Why do you want to uninstall IE 7 and, presumably roll back to the very insecure IE 6?

Pete, Thank you for your response. I understand how incomplete my post is.

IE7. So would like to regain the space used by IE7. Possible? tks.

It is not possible to remove Internet Explorer completely from Windows as it is intergated into it.

However uninstalling IE 7 through Add/Remove Programs should remove IE 7 completely and restore IE 6. At present you have both on the drive although you will gain no more than a few Mb.

Follow these instructions to remove temporary files which may well have built up substantially over the years if they have not been cleared .....

Start > Run > type in %temp% > Enter. An Explorer window will open containing the temp files under your username - they are all safe to delete although a couple may be in use and cannot be deleted.

Then go to C:\Windows\Temp and do the same with the same rider re. a couple of files or so in use.

Then Empty your Temporary Internet files - can do this before removing IE7 ....

Tools > Internet Options > General Tab > Browsing History - delete button and select Temporary Internet files.

If the above does not reclaim enough hard drive space look to uninstalling any programs that you do not use anymore and consider burning some of your infrequently used data to DVD/CD or see below re. an additional drive.

One final thought is to set a fixed size pagefile (swapfile) rather than a Windows managed size ......

Control Panel > System - Advanced tab > Performance > Settings button > Advanced tab > Virtual Memory > Change button. Click on the Custom size button and type into the initial size and maximum size boxes a value equal to 1.5x the RAM fitted to your computer ( if you have 1 Gb RAM enter 1500 in each box, if you have 512 Mb RAM enter 768 and so on) and click on the Set button. You will need to reboot.

The only remaining option if you still do not have enough free space is either to have a second hard drive fitted or use an external hard drive and move your data over to that.

Pete, I have printed your response and will try to implement such. However,
I have one question: I sent the unstall question to Microsoft and received the
folowing page:I will not quote it in entirety, just the warning which says : Use
the IE 7 Beta 2 uninstall tool only if the computer and the IE match the following requirements.
Serious problems might occur if you use this tool on a computer that does not
meet these requirements. These problems might require that you reinstall Windows operating system.
To use this tool you must have IE 7 version 7.0.5346.5 installed.
I have IE7 version 7.0.6000.16608. What do you think?

The IE 7 Beta 2 uninstall tool is only to be used to remove the Beta - a pre release version of IE 7 which you do not have and which would only have been installed knowingly by yourself after downloading it from the MS site a year or two ago. It would not have been installed through Windows/Microsoft Update.

The numbering of IE 7 versions is enough to confuse anyone :) ....

On my desktop running XP Pro SP3 my version of IE 7 is 7.0.5730.13
On my laptop running XP Pro SP2 the version is 7.0.5730.11 and
On my other desktop running Vista Business the version is 7.0.6000.16609.

All computers are fully up to date with patches, etc.

As I posted earlier the correct method of uninstalling IE 7 is through Add/Remove Programs which rolls you back to 6.

If you have any doubts leave IE 7 alone - the few Mb of disk space reclaimed will not have any significance if you are that short of disk space. For the computer to work well you need a minimum of 20% free space - any less than that the system will bog down and not work efficiently and below that level it is unlikely that you can defragment the drive.
