My in-laws have my old P-3 1Gb clone with XP Home. It works but it is getting to be dog slow. I have done all I can to keep it cleaned up and efficient but I am just wondering if it is time to dump the ol' Asus mobo. They only web surf. 90 years old with a DSL line, a thing of beauty!!

    1. Are there any last resort efforts left that you would suggest that could breathe new life into such a dinosaur? I regularly run the usual progs such as spybot, hijackthis, ccleaner, jv16.

    2. Since there is only the one user, and assuming that I could still get a mobo with IDE controllers, how complicated would the mobo changeout be?

    Thanks, Larry

    Hey Larryb,

To put a new mainboard in a system of that age you will need to change:

    1) Power Supply
    2) Memory
    3) CPU

My suggestion, buy them a new tower, the cost will probably end up to be less then trying to upgrade the old one.

Work faster? Since they have DSL, it must be the computer that is slowing them down. Getting slower and slower.

It should speed it up a bit, but you will have legacy issues with a bloated OS and the upgraded system will only work as fast as the old hard drive.

So, it sounds like I would be better off with a new computer. One of my concerns is that the new ones from Dell, HP, etc, have so much bloatware on them that I wonder how much net gain potential is there.

Dell has an option to NOT get the bloatware when ordering on line;)

As far as the new mobo goes...Odds are, at best you would be purchasing a six year old board that happens to not have been used. You might maybe be able to find one that uses DDR versus the pc100 ram....
