We have an external hosting company but we use Exchange for sharing contacts and calendars. Can i have the exchange server take any outgoing mail and sent it through an external smtp account with an external host. The host requires smtp authentication. I tried doing this by a smart host (which i don't quite know what a smart host is) and tried forwarding all mail through x server. I entered the account username password and tried it without, no luck. Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Hi

I have used a smarthost on several occasions to bypass emails being blocked by blacklists or bouncing back when not being sent because of external sources blocking them. I have never had to setup smtp authentication.

I simply contacted the relevant ISP, asked them to set up relay for that particular domain name and then asked the ISP for their smtp address details. From here I added the smtp address details into Exchange as a smarthost and it has worked fine everytime.

Don't know if anyone else has set it up this way but I've never had a problem with it.

    Regards,
    Jeff

Thanks for the tip. I have setup smarthost for certain address spaces. I had them forward direct to their mail exchange record IP and it usually worked fine. I guess it may not be possible to do a an all encompassing forward.
