I have a D-Link DI-624M wireless router. It has MIMO and smart antenna technology. I can't recall how much time passed since I bought it. It works fine. I wonder if the N technology routers are faster. FRYE's is selling an AIRLINK N router for $29. Will it improve(speed up) my connection? Or, do I need to upgrade my wireless receiver as well? My laptop has the Dell 1390 WLAN mini card installed.
As I mentioned, everything works ok. I'm just wondering if a $29 purchase would represent an upgrade. Thanks.

You need N type wireless systems at both ends of the wireless connection. So just upgrading the router will not give you a performance improvement (unless there is something wrong with your current system).

In fact, you may even get a drop in performance. If the new router can't connect via N mode, it will probably drop down to one of the older modes until it finds one the receivers can accept. The new router's performance in an older mode may well not match a router designed for that mode. Especially if the new router is a budget model.

Your wifi card in the Dell is a Dell 1390 which is a Broadcom 43xx chipset and is 80211g. It will still function with a wifi N router but as reg said, yopur performance will degrade. Also, realize that switching over to a n router and a n wifi card will only increase speed for transfers on the LAN, not Internet speeds.

Thanks guys. I guess I'll have to stick with what I have. Not that it is all that bad. I'm with Comcast, and I swear there are times of day when the pages from the net load slower than they did in the dial up days.
Sticking with what I have, are there any tweaks that are possible to maximize the connect and download speeds?
    Thanks again.
