    Random PC Crashing/Restarts

    Hello, everyone.

I was referred by noahdfear from my thread over in HijackThis log help.

Here's what is most relevant for this section:

There are many things I can tell you that could possibly help you help me. I'll try to keep them short and in a list:

I play a LOT of graphic-intensive games. I have a Radeon X1950PRO which has been getting about 70 degrees Celsius playing Crysis on medium/high settings.

I have scanned my computer with Norton about a month ago(uninstalled), AVG the same time as Norton(uninstalled), BitDefender just a week or two ago, and Ad-Aware today. Norton, AVG, and BitDefender successfully found and deleted everything they found. Ad-Aware found "Win32.Trojan.KillProc ", but was a false positive.

It seems it only happens when I am playing games. I JUST thought about that. I'm so stupid.

A forum I visit quite often had a post I found today that said:
"ATI released a new version of their Radeon drivers, 7.12, which causes graphical corruption on OpenGL. To reverse this, get the following. It is universal for all Radeon cards.

    http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/xp/radeonx-xp.html "
This may be the problem, but I think the random crashing has been going on before I downloaded a update from ati.com.

Info on how my PC is crashing:

It only happens while I'm in a game, and it doesn't matter which game it is.

I'll be playing my game, and with no warning or error sound, my monitor will do the same thing it does when it, I guess 'hibernates' after the screen-saver has been on for a good while. My monitor will say "POWER SAVING ENABLED" in a big colorful box which floats around like a screen-saver.

This will happen while in the middle of a game, and I can't do anything to get it back running. After a few seconds, my computer will restart itself. Before it can even get to the login screen of Windows, it restarts yet again. Then again, and again. The only way to keep from looping is to hold the shutdown button on the front of the tower. It then proceeds to run without any problems or errors.

Something interesting happened the last time I played a game, I could hear the game's ambient sounds(gunfire and mortar rounds) in the background still playing. I tried Ctrl+Alt+Delete, but nothing. I moved around the mouse to see if it would hover over any buttons and make a sound. Nothing. It soon went into the looping restarts.

I followed this guide to get my memory dump, but I never set it to make one. I'll have to get my PC to crash again.

    Dxdiag info:

If I should be posting this in WindowsXP help, please move this.

    Hi,
I can only relate it to my own experiences.

You are noting high GPU temps. I have experienced "graphics shutdown" on an ATI card/s. The sound, etc, still working while the screen is blank is a sign to me that the graphics has shut-down. You seem to get out of the startup "loop" eventually, is it when the graphics has cooled down?

As a test, open the case and direct a desk fan into it. Can you run games hard/harder?

My ATI 9600XT card has a broken fan. When it first showed heat problems, it showed symptoms similar to yours. When I found the fan was broken and I was unable to find a replacement I added a PCI slot fan next to it (and added an extra case fan). It is still my main gaming computer.

I also had apparent driver problems which caused high temperatures in the graphics. I uninstall anything listed in Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs, then I check in device Manager. Before I reinstall any graphics drivers, I check for an update for the motherboard/chipset drivers. I don't use the latest drivers for graphics, if I find any problems using the drivers installed from the drivers CD that came with the card, I will look for updated drivers at the manufacturer of the card's website.

Your system is a Hewlett-Packard. Does it have in-built graphics?? When installing a an add-in card, uninstall any software for the built-in graphics first, look in Add/Remove Programs. Win XP should handle drivers, but if software is installed to run a different graphics adapter, Windows still runs it. Driver files versions may be different.

    So...
Me, I would see if heat was a problem. [Maybe there is a poor air flow through the case.]

Bad drivers...look for an update for the chipset drivers, these are base drivers, they oversee the graphics (drivers). Remove any software related to other (built-in) graphics. Try the drivers supplied with the card, if they work, stick with them (do you have "Update Drivers" enabled in Windows Update?). Look for updates at the card manufacturer's website.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------
I took my 9600 system away with me for a trip and inadvertently disconnected the slot fan. I got problems like you described, I went into Safe Mode (with networking) and was able to download chipset drivers and graphics drivers from the manufacturer's website. It is back to being my gaming computer :)

    Matt

    Hello again, everyone.

I have some new information to help you help me.

Just a few days ago, I reformatted my hard drive. The cause of the random restarts were what I thought to be just some corrupt file. So I tossed all my important information on a 500GB external, and reformatted using HP's restore menu. I choose the "Destructive restore ", since I couldn't find the tools to create a backup disc of Windows so I could reformat that way.

My computer was wiped clean. I got most of my programs installed again, and my files back on here.

I thought the crashing problem would be fixed... It wasn't. As I was playing Crysis, my heart sank as it happened again. The same kind of random restart. Then I knew it was a hardware problem.

Before I reformatted, I tried to get the crashdump to work. I could never get it to make a dump, so I gave up on my previous thread. Thankfully, I was able to get it to work today, and now I have a minidump file.

    Here we are:

    THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER_M (100000ea)
The device driver is spinning in an infinite loop, most likely waiting for
hardware to become idle. This usually indicates problem with the hardware
itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly.
If the kernel debugger is connected and running when watchdog detects a
timeout condition then DbgBreakPoint() will be called instead of KeBugCheckEx()
and detailed message including bugcheck arguments will be printed to the
debugger. This way we can identify an offending thread, set breakpoints in it,
and hit go to return to the spinning code to debug it further. Because
KeBugCheckEx() is not called the .bugcheck directive will not return bugcheck
information in this case. The arguments are already printed out to the kernel
debugger. You can also retrieve them from a global variable via
    "dd watchdog!g_WdBugCheckData l5" (use dq on NT64).
On MP machines it is possible to hit a timeout when the spinning thread is
interrupted by hardware interrupt and ISR or DPC routine is running at the time
of the bugcheck (this is because the timeout's work item can be delivered and
handled on the second CPU and the same time). If this is the case you will have
to look deeper at the offending thread's stack (e.g. using dds) to determine
spinning code which caused the timeout to occur.

Please do not start a new thread for a continuation of the same problem - those in touch with you will not necessarily read it - I have merged your two threads.

    A caveat ....
    However .... Probably caused by : ati2mtag.sys ( ati2mtag+f8003 )

    From your dump ...
I would reinstall/update your ATI drivers and if that does not cure the problem try another graphics card.

Sorry for posting a new thread. I didn't know what to do, and the rules said nothing about how to properly continue a old thread(or maybe I didn't look hard enough).

After I reformatted, I got the latest driver for my graphics card, and installed it. After I restarted, my resolution was at 800x600 and everything had really nasty colors. It told me that I had a driver that did not work with Windows, so I reverted back to the driver on the CD that my card came with.

I will try it again, and I will try and make sure that I didn't download the wrong driver update.

    EDIT:

I've reinstalled the newest graphics driver, and it seems to be working properly this time.

I played quite a bit of Crysis with even more objects getting tossed about by a strong tornado(that was when it crashed last time).

I think this might have fixed it, I'm not sure. I'll post here again if it happens again.

Also, if one of those experienced guys would come by and take a look just in case, that'd be great.

Thank you for all your help.

    Bad news.

    It just crashed again.

I don't know what to do anymore. I guess I'll have to wait for one of those experienced users to get back on.

Debug the latest dump and post it - it may or may not confirm that ATI is still the problem.

    Arguments:
Arg1: 8982e6d0, Pointer to a stuck thread object. Do .thread then kb on it to find
    the hung location.
    Arg2: 896a5e30, Pointer to a DEFERRED_WATCHDOG object.
Arg3: ba4dfcbc, Pointer to offending driver name.
Arg4: 00000001, Number of times "intercepted" bugcheck 0xEA was hit (see notes).

The cause of the crash is the same as in your previous log - ati2mtag.sys so nothing has changed.

As an nVidia user and non-gamer I find it difficult to help you further except to say that you could try older versions of the catalyst drivers although I doubt that would help any as the date stamp for the file is .....

    FAILURE_BUCKET_ID: 0xEA_IMAGE_ati2mtag.sys_DATE_2006_08_22

so it does not appear to have been updated - unless a newer version is not overwriting the old.

Matt is the man regarding clean uninstalling ATI drivers.

Until Mattman has a chance to review your thread, you can browse the following "How To" article.
    ATi Catalyst Installation Guide.
It provides a step by step process ... starting with proper system backups (yeah boring, but keep reading, has a very complete removal outine). The author is a firm believer in "Cleaning up" before installing and provides detailed step-by-step guide.

I went through the troubleshooting wizard at ATI to the section "The system is crashing ". I found this:
You have an X1950 which is recommended to have the 450 Watt PSU. Your computer is a Hewlett Packard, if the PSU does not meet those requirements, you will need to investigate if you can upgrade (it may not take a standard PSU).

The troubleshooting at ATI includes a long list of checks. Updating the chipset drivers, upgrading the BIOS, checking temperatures, etc, etc. You should check each area in turn.

If your HP is a standard machine you should consider if it can be modified/upgraded to do what you want (like running a high end graphics card and gaming).
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
For drivers, I suggest booting into Safe Mode, going to Control Panel and uninstall the listing for the graphics in Add or Remove Programs. There is an uninstaller at the ATI website(search for uninstaller in the downloads). You could run that in Safe Mode.
