If you do then you know that Windows Media Player is using it's own internal filter for these wav files which explains why you can play them with WMP but not with other programs (WinAmp) or with Netscape's Live Audio plugin.

Yes I do have that filter which apparently explains why the files play in WMP. Am now working on installing the other file and after running a few test will post those results. Thanks for the help.

You're welcome, and good luck with the codec install.

Hope to hear back that this resolves the problem with the Netscape LiveAudio plugin and certain wav files.

Ladies (Ramona & Alice), to borrow a phrase, "Houston, we have lift off ". Yes......!!!!

Thanks to your valuable brain-storming and persistance, the problem is apparently resolved as I can now play both embeded .wav files and .wav file links on the web site previously used for test purposes [http://amysrefuge.homestead.com/The_60s.html] as well as over a dozen others. AND, the playback is being handled by Netscape LiveAudio (npaudio.dll).:D After the other changes I made, the lynch pin was apparently installing the Fraunhofer IIS MPEG -Layer 3 codec (Professional) file name: l3codecp.exe. In addition, I am now able to play those same .wav files, when downloaded from a web site to my HD, through my default .wav file player Winamp where previously I would get the error message "Unable to start playback. Missing codec or unsupported format" whenever I tried to play those downloaded files.

Sooooo, to solve the problem described in the original post, here is a recap of the steps taken:

    1. Created a new Plugin folder making sure the last file entered was (npaudio.dll). This resolved the Midi play problem by removing Quicktime as the default player, replacing it with Netscape LiveAudio which in turn also resolved the browser crash problem.

    2. Installing the Fraunhofer IIS MPEG -Layer 3 codec resolved the inability to play .wav [MPEG -Layer 3] files.

    3. Installing the Fraunhofer IIS MPEG -Layer 3 codec also resolved the problem of Winamp not being able to play MPEG -Layer 3 files.

    4. Installing the Fraunhofer IIS MPEG -Layer 3 codec also resolved the inability to read the Properties | Details | Audio Format | of MPEG -Layer 3 files. Without the Fraunhofer device installed, downloaded MPEG -Layer 3 files were listed as Audio Format = Unknown.

    5. BTW, while I seldom use IE 5.5, it also would not play any of the .wav files on the web sites I tested. Now it does, using Winamp which I have associated with .wav files.

I'm pretty satisfied that this problem is resolved. Yippee!

Conclusion: unless you really, really need or just can't live without Quicktime, you might be better to forgo installing the program.

Quicktime = "A pace employed by a person navigating from the main house, to the little house behind the house, when experiencing an urgent call of nature ". (defination as taken from an ancient dictionary scribed by monks in the remote peaks of the Himalayas) Knowing the reason for a quicktime trip, the program appears to be well named.

Again many thanks to Ramona and Alice for working me through this worry.:D

To show my appreciation, putting out a large Key Lime Cheesecake especially for you gals:

Oops, one final question. Any worries about upsetting anything we just accomplished if I now go ahead and install the WMP codecs you suggested or should I leave well enough alone? I'm already paranoid enough about what new evils may be lurking in the just released critical IE mega patch if I install it.

    Thanks.:D

If it isn't broken... don't fix it.

    Hi washoe,

What good news, and so glad that everything works as it should. I will certainly defer to Alice's expertise, as she is the queen of media players, and should have all your thanks. Also good that the codec fixed Winamp! ;)

Unless you have further problems, just hang on to those codecs in the event you might need them later.

As to the new MS cumulative patch for IE, have you read this thread:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8321

There is some good info there. I've already installed the patch, and to date experienced no problems. I did not do the gopher fix prior to installing the patch, so nothing to undo. Since I have IE locked down, I'm not too concerned anyway.

    Cheers,

    Ramona :D

    washoe,

So happy to hear of your success, and that the codec install not only enabled you to play those wav files with Netscape's LiveAudio, but also provided an "added bonus" of enabling WinAmp to play those files!

Ramona (Queen of Netscape) you are too kind. I'm no queen of media.... just persistent as heck, especially when 'competing' with you to come up with a solution to a problem. You got the ball rolling by showing how to re-enable Netscape LiveAudio with the Plugin "shuffle ". I made a good guess about the codec issue.

PS, Quicktime must have it's own internal codec to play those files, as does WMP, since it would play the files even though Netscape later crashed. I'm wondering if the Quicktime 5 install had anything to do with the missing codec?
