Does it matter which order microsoft update patches are installed?

If they are installed in the order in which they were released? Couldn't this result in the unnecessary downloading of some patches which are superseded by later patches ?

    THANKS

It shouldn't matter in which order updates get installed but when I make a fresh installation of XP SP2, I try to get them in the order of date. Some 150 updates have been released since SP2 and some 90 are still valid. The missing 60 updates have been replaced by either new versions or new updates. Investigating all 150 to find out which is still valid would be time consuming. What I would do is to connect to Windows Update for a short while and scribble down the needed updates. I do have the list for my system which you can have but your system might differ slightly (AMD/Intel, .NET Framework or not and other differences). Do you have the updates downloaded?

May I ask why you do not use Windows/Microsoft Update? No problem with release dates or order of installation.

    Start > Programs > Windows/Microsoft Update.
