I've just used PCMover to transfer a users setings, data and PROGRAMS to a new PC. The old pc had a lot of programs on it and like most people my customer can't find all of the disks, let alone the time to reinstall, so I thought I'd try the software that move programs aswell as data. I was bit dubious but for £30 or so I thought it would be worth a try.

Everything seemed to go very well except that on boot explorer.exe fails to run. The old desktop has been transferred as have the programs, I can use CTL-ALT-DEL to browse for programs to run, word excel etc. I can run MSCONFIG Regedit etc. but EXPLORER does not do anything. There is a brief flash of the desktop, toolbar and icons but then just the wallpaper.
I have already tried repairing the OS and still get to the same point. Starting in any mode is also the same. Scanned for viruses, spyware etc. nothing changes

    Any suggestions welcome............

Thanks for the suggestions, most of the Google ssearches related to the same specific user and problem and as yet none seemed to have been resolved.

I'd already tried most of these before posting on the WindowsBBS site although a Google search using slightly different words does throw up additional items. Out of interest, amazingly this posting appeared in the Google search a matter of hours after my first posting....

Anyway I did find a solution directly from Laplink, the producers of PCMover. the details a pasted below. I can't take any credit, I guessed it was something simple but could not believe how simple and bizarely Google was the culprit.

Not sure if thie fix will work for others with a similar problem where Explorer fails to start or run on specific instruction but it might be worth a try, so anyone reading this could try BUT I WOULD ADD THAT BEFORE TRYING YOU BACKUP THE REGISTRY.......

Anyway here's what worked for me.

This issue is caused by the migration of the Google Desktop that is not compatible with the New computer.
On the New computer, press CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up the Windows Task Manager.
Click on File -> New Task, type REGEDIT into the box and click Ok. This will bring up the Registry Editor.

In the Registry editor, click on the plus sign (+) next to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
Click on the plus sign (+) next to CLSID
    Click on the plus sign (+) next to {A5E46E3A-8849-11D1-9D8C-00C04FC99D61}
Right-click on TreatAs and select DELETE.
Click Yes to confirm the deletion
Once this key has been deleted, reboot the computer and it should boot up normally now.

    Thanks for the help anyway.

Thanks for posting back with your solution.

Yea, this Google software seems to get its 'fingers' deep inside your system! We've seen a fair share of Google toolbar problems when IE is updated, we can add Google desktop to the list.
