I have multiple USB ports connected, with peripherals being 2 printers, mouse, cable modem, external hard drive.

For the last 12 months or so, XP has been hanging on start up - I get the XP start up screen with the scrolling bar, then a black screen - nothing for approx two - three minutes, then start up.

I believed this to be a USB problem, so disconnected all USB cables, then reconnected one by one to try and find a conflict. It appears that whenever I connect either the modem. mouse or external hard drive, windows is hanging on start up. This even happens if I plug them into a different USB card (I have 2 installed).

Device Manager shows no conflicts - does anybody have any ideas on what could be causing this, and more importantly, now to fix it? .

    Thanks,

    Justin

Its a pain - but keep testing. I'm going to guess its the hard drive...Second guess would be the modem.

    OK - some more testing.

Disconnected all USB devices, connected wireless mouse to USB 1.0 port. No problems. Connected printers to USB 2.0 card - hang time is back again. Connected mouse to same card - hang time, but only half as long (about 90 seconds).

    Any more tips?

From your tests the USB card appears to be problematic .....

I suggest you remove it and reseat it and test.

If no different put it in another PCI slot preferably not the one adjacent to the AGP slot if you are on AGP as opposed to PCI Express - I think that slot often shares IRQ's.

Would do no harm to go into Device Manager and remove/uninstall all USB Controllers and Root Hubs and reboot to allow Windows to redetect and load the drivers.

Pete is on the right track here, looking at the amount of items connected I would recommend to remove 1 USB PCI card, you must have some USB ports at the back off the Motherboard if not try using one card with 4 external and one internal port connecting what you need most and test, if ok install your second card and test again if the problem returns try all PCI slots. I have experienced several conflicts with USB cards.
Your printer is most likely ok to run on USB 1.1 if your USB ports of the mobo are not USB2.
