I've searched the forums and found other threads about this, but none of them were like my situation.

OK, I would like to network between my laptop (Windows XP SP2) and my desktop (98SE). The laptop is wireless, the desktop is directly connected to my Linksys wireless router. Internet works fine for both, but I can't share files or a printer between them.

I'll answer any other hardware/software questions you need to know about my connection. Thanks in advance! -Lando

Th easiest way is to set up two different messenger accounts
    One for each computer
It can be msn messenger , yahoo ,skype eyeball chat or anything
Just ensure the two messengers installed are the same brand i.e msn and msn , yahoo and yahoo messenger
When the two connect - the connection will be done over the internet
Once connected simply send the files at blinding speed to the other computer
The initial connection is over the internet
However the transfer does not go over the internet , the switch in the router will route the transfer at very high speed over your local network
You can get older versions of windows msn messenger at oldversion.com
Think that the latest that works for windows 98 is version 7.0
    It will work fine

    http://www.oldversion.com/download.php?idlong=d5cbb9ca8b0124e3afa39c4a67f4946f

Your slowest component and limiting factor will be the wireless speed.
If the card is a b - g would be better
If it is a g - set in the router to g only not mixed

If the files are single you may want to compress them into a package win winrar or winzip and open them on computer number 2

p.s i am amazed there were no answers to this question
if it does not work out - get a large usb stick
Many have windows 98 se drivers for the same product line - for the smaller versions
Has to be windows 98 se not the original version

Thanks for the reply. I'd never thought of that idea :) However, I was hoping that I could set up a LAN?

You already have a "lan" with your wireless computer and a router
    (local area network)
Not sure if you mentioned it but I assumed that you had a router beaming out the wireless signal
Most wireless routers have both ethernet jack and wireless connections
