computer 1 has ADSL modem for Internet connection. It has splitter filter to connect with phone to wall plug. computer 2 is in another room which also has phone wall plug. I want to be able to connect computer 2 to the Internet at the same time. I understand there are three ways: cable, wireless and using the phone line. The distance is too long for the cable option. I have some details on the wireless option but I believe using the phone line would be easier and cheaper. I would need details of how this is done.

It can't be done using a single phone line. You would have to add a second separate telephone line.

How far is it, to be too far for cable. If it really is more than 100 metres, you'll probably struggle with wireless.

Have you considered connection via the mains? This may be the solution if both points are in the same building. Have a look at this solution for example:

Thanks ReggieB for that suggestion. It looks like the way to go but I will have to do some homework on Ethernet.

I have found that I need to get two plugs to connect the computers through the power supply. Another source has a wireless connection. This source claims that the power supply connection generates a lot of mains noise. Is that correct and does this do harm? computer 1 has Fast Ethernet Adaptor. Do I use that?

    What distance are we talking?

If it was me I would buy an inexpensive wireless router. Plug the DSL modem's Ethernet cable into the Wireless Router, Ethernet cable out of router to PC 1.
Wireless from router to PC2. Wireless card in PC2 and your done.

The distance is 16 m. I do not expect that to be a problem.
That is the set up that was recommended by one firm. I have a diagram of the set up with the ADSL modem cable going to the WAN port of the purchased D-Link router. The cable from the router goes to PC1. I expect that goes in the USB port that the modem now goes to. The Network Settings: IP Address, Subnet Mask, Gateway are listed. The wireless Network Interface Card takes up a PCl slot. Its settings are also provided. I will have to find out how to put this Card in a PCl slot and how to set up the Network Settings. Windows Help seems to provide that info. PC1 has a network adapter but PC2 has only a dialup adapter. Is the Interface Card a network adapter? I have a PC3 that may be worth connecting into the network. Would that just require another Wirelss Interface Card and another IP Address?

I have now acquired a D-Link wireless router. It comes with an Ethernet Cable and has an Ethernet WAN and 4 LAN ports. The Installation Guide includes connecting the LAN 1 port on the router to PC1. There is an Ethernet port on the back of PC1 so this can be done using the cable supplied. It also says connect the modem to the WAN port of the router. The modem has USB ports and currently connects to PC1 in a USB port using a USB cable. I cannot therefore follow the Installation Guide. What can be done?

If your modem also has an Ethernet port I would power down the modem for 10 minutes and then make the connection.

If the modem is USB only then we will need to "Punt ".

It can still be done but will require ICS (internet connection sharing)

The modem is DSL-200 and has USB port only and is connected to PC1. PC-2 has dial-up adapter only while ICS requires a network adapter. PC-1 does have a network adapter.

I have been unable to find where I can buy either the D-Link or Netbank wireless router+modem here in Australia. It has, however, been suggested that I replace the DSL-200 USB modem I currently use with a DSL-504T USB Ethernet modem. I will then be able to connect up the wireless router that I have.

DSL-504T is an ADSL router according to the DLink Australia site. That's just what you want!!!!
