Well, I'm pretty much at my wit's end now--I've been having this problem for a while now and have more or less exhausted my pedestrian means of finding a solution. Now it's time to turn to the big boys and beg (oh please oh please) for their assistance in the matter!

After a search of the BBS I found a thread from a little over a year ago, but it didn't look like the problem was resolved as much as the dude just disappeared.

    For the record I'm running:
    Intel Q6600 processor
    Elitegroups ECS 671T-M motherboard
2x Corsair DDR2 667MHz RAM (not sure of the specs off the top of my head, but I can get them if necessary)
    XFX Geforce 8600 GTS PCI-E(16x)
    Thermaltake Purepower 600 power supply
Seagate ST3500320AS 500 gig SATA HD

All the drivers I have are updated to the most recent versions...save my onboard sound drivers (Realtek onboard something660 which has all but vanished from their website back in late '06).

I ran the Microsoft crash memory testing...thing (where I created a boot-disk that tested my memory for errors by flooding it with data) without any issues.

I get a few BSODs--sometimes involving portcls.sys or nv4disp.sys. My most recent is from portcls.sys and I downloaded your handy utility to show off my sexy dump log!

It can happen at any time--mostly when I'm downloading, and especially when I'm viewing streaming video. This time it happened when I was playing a video game.

    And, without further ado...

    IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (a)
An attempt was made to access a pageable (or completely invalid) address at an
interrupt request level (IRQL) that is too high. This is usually
caused by drivers using improper addresses.
If a kernel debugger is available get the stack backtrace.
    Arguments:
    Arg1: 514807e8, memory referenced
    Arg2: 0000001d, IRQL
    Arg3: 00000000, bitfield :
    bit 0 : value 0 = read operation, 1 = write operation
bit 3 : value 0 = not an execute operation, 1 = execute operation (only on chips which support this level of status)
Arg4: 804d9d57, address which referenced memory

Any insight into this matter would be greatly appreciated, as I'm about two more crashes away from setting the entire thing on fire and moving on to a TI-82 for my computing needs! :p

    Welcome to the Board :)

First a caveat re dump logs ....
My reading of your log suggests a problem with your sound drivers while playing Counterstrike (or similar using steam)

If you Google for portcls.sys you will find that it is a sound driver and that many others have the same problem. One solution posted was to install a sound card and disable the onboard sound. I'll leave it to you to do the leg work :)

nv4disp.sys is an Nvidia display driver which ties in with your activity when the computer BSOD's. Again I'll leave the leg work to you.

Bottom line - look at your sound and video drivers and study the links I have posted.

Hmmm thanks for the google-fu on the sound issue. Unfortunately I can't pop a sound card on in as I haven't had one for a while now. The only thing that makes me  is that all reference of my Realtek sound device has been removed from their website as if it never existed. Maybe my luck is that I got the deformed child Realtek hides in the basement. There is, however, a hotfix to portcls.sys so I'll be checking that out.

As for the nv4disp.sys BSOD It has done it regardless of driver version, and from what I've read of it the issues mainly occurred on older, AGP, cards. That or they're not in English! Maybe the next time it happens I can take a snapshot and let someone take a gander at it.

Thanks for your help and I'll keep you apprised of my situation. Hopefully my rabbit hole does not go very deep!

P.S. Thanks for having me on the board. It's great to see the wise sages helping us peasants in our day-to-day affairs!

Well color me inept. I'm going to be busted down to a basic user at this rate!

I never realized that the mobo site would have drivers for all their onboard components. Thanks!
