    Hi Skaler

Don't know if you are waiting on me or not but I was waiting on your response after you ran the 2 other cleanup tools I posted in post #16.

    HI Mike,
Sorry about any possible miscommunication. I just got home from work and ran the two removal tools. Each one seems to have run successfully, though passed by too quickly. I could read the last line each time that told me to reboot te computer. After both runs, I went to the control panel and looked under the security center icon to see that "McAfee AV is reporting tha it is turned off. "
I have not yet attempted to initiate the AVG7.5 installation. I will, and will let you know what it says.
BTW, I assume you're having scanned the results of scQuery, runscan, and tasklist yielded nothing useful?
    Thanks again.
    Vic

    Hi Vic

    Sorry been very covered up.

    No no real issues.

But go into the Security center and on the left click

Change the way Security center Alerts me

    Uncheck the Virus protection

I don't think windows would do any blocking but your problem is unique.

Remember to turn it back on after we fix this issue.

After you get back on the results of what you are doing now I have one
other way to try and install .

And as a last resort we will force install AVG.

    Mike

Well, during the AVG setup, after scanning my computer I got the same message:

    Attention

Another AV/security product is currently installed on this computer.

It is not advisable to have more than one AV product running on the same computer.

We strongly recommend that you cancel this installation, and then uninstall the current AV product. Once the other AV is uninstalled, you can safely install AVG.

I am tempted to just go ahead and install AVG, because there is certainly nothing "running" on this computer at this point. What vestige or fragment there is left of McAfee certainly can't interfere. Of course, what do I know?
    What do you think?

I had already unchecked that box. The only check I have is about upates, though both the updates and firewall sections are green.

Ok so it wants to install now?

Confirm that the Security setting has been off all along?

    Yes proceed with the install.

    Hi Vic

Just my thoughts on what has happend for posterity.

The Window Security center is suposed to be an informational system. It should not stop things like this and I don't believe it does. Since many people do get multiple resident Virus scanners installed which is not a good thing since they can confilict.

I actually think that AVG is checking the Security center flag its self. Possibly checking something else also.

This would lead me to believe that the last mcafee cleanup process did in fact clean up something.

So now we are getting the warning only about a existing Virus scanner from the registry settings of the Security Center (even tho it is off) only that says we have Mcafee installed tho we don't.

What is now letting us thru to only the Security Center settings is what ever we cleaned last with the Mcafee cleaners. Wish I knew what is was.

After continuing with the installation I suspect it will clear the setting and allow the Security Center to be turned back on and detect AVG.

    Awaiting you outcome.

    Mike

Well, no, it doesn't want to install. My post #24 is verbatim of what I get when I try to install AVG. It does a system scan, and then comes up with this Attention box. This is what it was from the beginning.
I'm just thinking of throwing in the towel and just going ahead with the installation anyway.
If I read it right, they just strongly urge against it. They don't forbid it or prevent it. My situation with my laptop was "worse" if you can call it worse, only because with every cold boot of my laptop, I'd get a box that said that some components of McAfee were not completely installed, etc. I did install AVG on my laptop almost immediately after I bought it. Then, periodically, McAfee would come up with a notice of virus definitions out of date, would I like to update? Yes or No brought the same results-nothing. The box just disappeared. Still, the Mcafee MCPR.exe program successfully removed that. Yet it can't seem to do it on this Gateway desktop, even though I never permitted the installation after a system restore. Go figure.
Anyway Mike, this is not a critical computer to me. If all else fails, I'll just reformat and restore again, though I don't know how to prevent the McAfee surreptitious installation. I might just let it install itself and then use Add/Remove to uninstall it.
Thanks for your attention and effort.

Yes install anyway against its advice.

That is what I meant above.

Answer yes to install any way.

    Mike

Please don't format yet after all of both our work.

    Good Luck!:)

Thanks Mike, I'll let you know how it goes. Right now, it's time for some old man tennis. The weather is cooperating.

    Hi Mike,
I installed AVG without a hitch, and then reinstalled Adaware2007 and spyware blaster. So far, so good. I really doubt that anything bad will come of it. Maybe it's just hope...
Thanks again for all of your kind help. I really appreciate it.
Just in case you're a hardware guru too, I'll be posting a problem with going from a SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS to a X-Fi Xtreme Music under Vista in the harware forum shortly.
