My desktop is getting old being that it using a AMD Classic 800 slot A on a Tyan Trinity KS2380 board. My nephew was upgrading his system, so gave me his old board a ECS K7S5A Pro (V5.0) with a AMD XP 2000+ cpu. I was able to use all my old hardware. The Tyan board had a VIA chipset and the other has a SIS chipset. I put in the new board and hooked up everything. Hit the power button and the monitor comes up with a message that the monitor is working ok and to check your video hardware. I check everything and booted the system and got the same message on my monitor. I then took out all the other cards but the video card and disconnected the hard drives. When I hit the powers button I got the same problem. I then changed to a PCI card from a AGP card and that did not work either. I also changed the memory and that did not help either. I know the board is getting power as the fans are running. When I had all of the system hooked up I could see that the DVD drive and the hard drive light worked. What do you think could be wrong?

PeteC thanks for the reply. I guess I should of added some more information. I am using Windows 2000 SP4. I also replace the battery. I will read the link you gave me after the game tonight. I can not load the drivers for the board as there is no video to see what you are doing. As soon as I boot the system I get that message on my monitor, so I can not even get into the BIOS.

The manual for that mobo is here ....

    http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Do...5A Pro (V5.0)&CategoryID=1&MenuID=82&LanID=0

I would clear the CMOS - following the instructions on page 8 and try again - simply replacing the battery may not be enough. The monitor should receive a signal as soon as you boot up to show the POST screen, etc. so I would look carefully at the connections at each end again.

Did you try the graphics card in more than one of the PCI slots - there is a note in the manual ......
Not sure how relevant that is.

It has support for 1.5v AGP Cards only.

Are you sure that the memory is compatible with the board ?

PeteC I did try other PCI slots. I did some more searching on google and found there were others that had the same problem. Most were told that the board only likes some companies memory. Did not say what company memory worked. The board uses DDR or SDRAM. You can use up to 1GB of either type but could not mix the two types. I have tried both types and neither worked. My nephew does not have the memory he used and could not remember what companies memory was used. For now I think I will just put the old Tyan board back in as it may be slow but the system runs fine. Thanks for your help.

OK - I have asked Mattman to drop in on this, but if there are known problems ....

BTW, according to Crucial the max memory per slot is 512 Mb - is that what you were using?

If you can't get the board to at least put out a video signal to the monitor with cpu, ram and video card installed (and nothing else connected)...and a clear CMOS did not clear up the problem, it does not sound like this set up is going to work at all. I think a dead giveaway would be that you can't even get a signal from a PCI video card. That should be a piece of cake for any board - very little compatibility issues with PCI video cards.

I had the non-pro version of this board and its popularity was legendary due to its VERY low price. It did develop an extreme love-hate relationship with the "user community" due to alot of problems.

The things I can think of at the moment:

    Yes, try clearing the CMOS.

The system can be started without any drives connected, at least to see if it will start and the graphics will run.

Could there be a short to earth from the motherboard to the case?

The other main area I would expect to be the RAM.

Chiles4 & mattman thanks for your input. I did clear the CMOS by taking out the battery and then put it back. I also tried the board out of the case. (memory, CPU with fan, video card & power supply) After I did my search on the board, I did find that people were having problems with this board. I can not see spending anymore time on this board or spending money on trying to get memory that will work. It would be better spent on a newer board and CPU.
