i'm trying to fix my boyfriend's desktop. his friend was trying to get rid of some trojans and deleted something he wasn't supposed to.
when i go to log in, i can, but instantly logs out. the background picture comes up, but nothing else.
it's doing this in safe mode. all we need is to get the pictures off it. is there anything we can do without taking it in?

    Welcome to WindowsBBS bubbles :)

Did you try logging on to the Administrator account in safe mode?
You might also try repeatedly tapping F8 when you start the computer, which will enable the Advanced Start Menu, where you should try using the 'Last Known Good Configuration' option.

My apologies for the late response. Do you have an XP cd (must be an Operating System disc, not a recovery cd) from which you can access the Recovery Console? If you can logon to the recovery console, execute the chkdsk /r command then restart and see if there's any change. If no joy, I would recommend doing a repair installation. Please note that if you intend to continue using the PC after the repair, and Internet Explorer 7 is currently installed, there are special steps to uninstall IE7 (there is a recovery console method listed too) prior to the repair, else IE will not work after the repair.

The only alternative to the above that I can think of would be to remove the drive and slave it in another computer, then copy the files you want.
