Adobe Reader 7 - freezes computer & cannot update/uninstall

    My computer uses Microsoft XP... Sometime ago, I got a message to update my adobe reader 7 to an updated version. Well it would not install, it kept giving an error. So I went back to Adobe 7 to use it and it constantly just freezes the computer system. So the Adobe site said to uninstall Adobe 7, I have tried several times and I get an error saying that it cannot be completely deleted. Now I cannot use any site that requires the Adobe Reader, i would appreciate any help at all. I am unfamiliar with anything other than just accessing and using the installed programs..
