    Delay time too short

I recently did a bunch of tweaks from different MVP websites. In the process one of the timing things I changed did something that I don't like. The problem is I don't have any idea how to get that particular timing set back to where it was before I reset it. In fact I don't have any idea WHICH timing thing might effect what I did that causes the problem...

Let me describe what is happening that I don't like and maybe someone will know what I need to change. One place where I notice this change is when for example I click on "Start" and then drag my mouse over "All Programs" on the way to something else and then "All Programs" pops up immediately so that I can no longer see what I wanted to see where I was heading. The change that was made changed the timing such that before I made this timing there would have been a certain time delay before "All Programs" popped up allowing me to drag over the top of it without it popping up and thus go to what I was dragging to.

Any help finding what delay time I changed to cause this problem and then steering me to it so I can fix it would be very much appreciated.

    THANKS!!!

    Jim

Jim - Welcome to the Board :)

I'll say nothing about noting down the source of tweaks you make to the system :)

This may be what you are after ....

    [Start] [Run] [Regedit]
    Registry Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Modify/Create the Value Data Type(s) and Value Name(s) as detailed below.
Data Type: String Value // Value Name: MenuShowDelay
Setting for Value Data: [Default = 400 / Adjust to Preference]
    Exit Registry and Reboot

PeteC: Thank you so much for laying this fix out for me...

I think "Elder Geek" website is where I picked this tweak up too...haha... If I could have thought of the proper words to search for I might have found the help but for some reason or rather I was drawing a blank.

At 76 I am lucky to remember to put my pants on when I get up in the morning. And all the more reason to keep a log of the things I do to my computer and the programs I install and when as YOU suggested. I used to do that years and years ago and with each new computer I say I am going to do that but don't seem to do it. Thanks for suggesting that to me!

I guess I had been putting up with this problem for about a month now...haha... Its too bad there isn't some program that automatically makes a record of all of the changes an operator makes and of all software installed and uninstalled to his or her computer. Maybe there is and I just don't know about it...haha...

I have been fiddling around with computers since the first Radio Shack computer came out and have learned a lot over the years but I believe I have forgotten more than I have learned and so sometimes I feel like a beginner computer operator...haha...

THANKS again Pete for your help.

You are most welcome - continue to enjoy your computing for as long as you can. Keeps the old grey matter active, if nothing else :)

    Pete:

I think I just figured out an easy way to record my Registry changes. I can go back up to the next main heading which in this case is "Desktop" right click and "export" that to a directory I am calling "REGISTRY CHANGES." Then I name the file and in this case it is named MenuShowDelay 1 to 400.txt which tells me that I changed the MenuShowDelay value from 1 to 400. I changed the suffix from .reg to .txt so that I can later on read the file. All of the necessary info is there for me to see to get back into the Registry to change it back if necessary.

I think this will work great for me...haha...if I don't forget to do it...

That's one way - another is to backup the Registry before making changes.

Best piece of software for this is ERUNT (freeware) - I have it set up on a schedule to back up the Registry daily and to keep the last 7 backups.

BTW - there is no need to change the extension to .txt - right click on the reg file > Edit.

Thanks for the info Pete about ERUNT. I have that on my computer but have never set it up to automatically save the registry. I am thinking about doing that. I have never used scheduler and have no idea about using it.

My machine runs all night long doing a virus scan and a spyware scan. The virus scan (AVG) starts at 11:30 PM and the Spyware scan (CounterSpy) starts at 2:30AM and is sometimes still running when I get up around 5AM. AVG Antivirus is also active while CouterSpy is not. I have SpySweeper running active. Periodically I will do a scan with SpySweeper with the Antivirus on however the SpySweeper Antivirus is not on when while SpySweeper is active. The reason I am telling you this is there would be no time that I would want to schedule a registry save at night. I reboot my computer every morning.

I am thinking maybe I would like to save the registry on Bootup but I have no idea how to do that...haha

I think it best for me to change the .reg to .txt because I just might start the registry restore of that piece that I saved instead of looking at the text by mistake...

    Thanks for your help Pete.

Details in the Readme file installed with ERUNT.

How to use the Windows Task Scheduler

Backing up the Registry takes under 5 minutes - I have mine set at a time I know the computer will be on - in this case 9.10 am. Backup is seemless - you will not see it happening :)

Okay Pete I think I got it all set up to run at 11:30AM and to keep the last 7 of the saves. We'll see...haha... I am not too good at figuring out this kind of stuff though.

Thanks for your help and for steering me in the right direction as it is very much appreciated.
