i had a few problems doing all this but i feel like i am making progress
to be honest its left a little bewildered.
so far i have installed spybot
found 58 problems 57 cookies 1 trojan and it clead these
installed ad-aware this hasn't run fully get to 90% and stops it had found 50 other problems but as yet can't sort these, i thinking of reinstall and do a rescan?

installed comodo firewall thats working ace

already had avast AV it puzzles me that it never detected all of the above although twice while doing spybot scan avast malware alarm went off lights flashing and everything (bit late now i'm thinking)

    installed spy blaster
    installed winpatrol
    installed IE spyad
    installed site adviser

as i said i thinking of reinstalling ad-aware but do you think there could a conflict with any of the above and uninstall these first?

or should we take a different route here is my HighJackThis report

    what do you think?

    Hi carljohnson
    Welcome to Windowsbbs :)

Spybot S&D's tea timer normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

    First step:
    • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
    • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
    • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
    • Open Spybot S&D
    • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
    • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
    • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
    • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
    • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer "(Protection of over-all system settings) active
    • OK any prompts.
    • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
    • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present <<Did you set restrictions with SpyBot? If so do not fix these two 06 entries.
    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {9034A523-D068-4BE8-A284-9DF278BE776E} - http://www.topsoftwarefeed.com/redirect.php (file missing)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: IE Anti-Spyware - {9034A523-D068-4BE8-A284-9DF278BE776E} - http://www.topsoftwarefeed.com/redirect.php (file missing)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

    Close HJT.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

    Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter "; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool "; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Please post the smitfraud log and a new HJT log.

    Thanks
    Geri

    Hi
    Unless I've misunderstood.
Just turning off the process in task manager is not good enough.

Then Please follow my directions as given.

    Hi
    OK now the fix.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter ".
    • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ? "; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter ".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Please post this log and one more new HJT log.
let me know how things are.

    Thanks
    Geri

    Geri,

    Hi carljohnson
    OK things look good.

Lets get a on-line scan to make sure there's nothing lurking.

Please do this in the order given.

    Delete these.

    Smitfraudfix.exe

    These files.
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\dumphive.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Process.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SrchSTS.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\VCCLSID.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\WS2Fix.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp.reg

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.
This is a good tool to get rid of the temporary garbage you pick up while surfing the net.
Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Check the boxes to the left of:

    Windows Temp
    Current User Temp
    All Users Temp
    Temporary Internet Files
    Prefetch
    Java Cache
    Recycle bin

The rest are optional - if you want it to remove everything check "Select All ".
Finally, click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on "Accept" If your pop "“up blocker blocks the ActiveX download, allow it, click on "Accept" again

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes or Install.
    • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
    • Now click on Scan Settings
    • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
      • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
      • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
        Scan Mail Bases
    • Click OK
    • Now under select a target to scan:
      • Select My Computer
    • This will program will start and scan your system.
    • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
    • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
      • Now click on the Save as Text button:
    • Save the file to your desktop.
    • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Please post the Kaspersky scan results.

    Thanks
    Geri

    Hi
    Downlod this.
    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt2.exe

    • # Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
      # Click on the CleanUp! button. When you do this a text file named cleanup.txt will be downloaded from the internet. If you get a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet you should allow it to do so. After the list has been download you'll be asked if you want to Begin cleanup process? Select Yes.
      # This step removes the files, folders, and shortcuts created by the tools I had you download and run.

    Now delete OTMoveIt2.exe

    it's not gone well

used the clean up and then went back to previous post

tried twice with kaspersky failed to complete scan both times it lock my system, gave it loads of time tried different things but had to use the reset button.

first times everything started ok second time system seems abit slow things not opening when i click them i have to do it a couple of times,

but as far as the scan goes it did show something before it stopped and it stopped at the same place both times and i think it was the same place that ad-aware stopped also.

    it said 10 viruses
    24 events

i watch which files were being scan and it was C:\System volume information\_restore...
the rest of the file name was going a bit fast but it was a lot of numbers and ended something like this
    from
    760-9d18-36e37CF)\RP21\A001????.DLL
    TO
    760-9d18-36e37CF)\RP30\A0015533.EXE

    Hi
    OK Lets try this one.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
    • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
    • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
    • Enter your Country
    • Enter your State/Province
    • Enter your e-mail address and click send
    • Select either Home User or Company
    • Click the big Scan Now button
    • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
    • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
    • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
    • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

    Thanks

    Hi
OK, then lets do the following.
Because your restore points are infected, lets clear them and make a new one.

This would be a good time to set a new system restore point for your machine.
Set New System Restore Point Windows XP. - Set New System Restore Point Windows Vista
Do not do this unless there are no other user accounts to be diagnosed.

If there are any other user accounts on this machine, they too, must be cleaned with AdAware and Spybot S&D. Not all infections are global, nor are all fixes global.
Log onto that user account, Run HJT and save log, post each user account here into this thread, but please, do only one at a time to avoid confusion. Please let us know that it is a different account.

Please look at this link for some preventive recommendations, It could keep you from ending up back here to the Spyware and Virus Removal Forms.

Let me know that things are OK and I'll mark this one resolved.

    Thanks
    Geri

i can't clear restore tried doing it following the step by step guide system restore tab was missing when i select properties after right my computer.

so i let microsoft guide do it for me, it couldn't do it either

so i tried to see if i could turn it off in the system restore in the control panel
it told me that i didn't have admin privileges and i should log off and log back on as an amin.

thats the problem there is only one use on this pc and that me by default i have admin there is no second user ive doubled cheked in user profiles via system properties there is just me but when i checked C:\windows\user profile folder it was empty it been a while but i'm sure that one shouldn't be empty

does this sound like something a virus would cause

but it got me really stump:confused:
i was hoping to post before you went off because you know a lot more then and you've been really hopeful

    cheers geri

i'm going to try and sort something i'll let you know and wait for your reply

    Hi
OK lets first try it in safe mode.

Print or save this to your desktop as a txt file so you can follow it in safe mode.

    Reboot into safe mode.
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Choose a administrator account to log on.
    Then follow these instructions.

    1. Click Start.
    2. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the System Restore tab.
    4. Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
    5. Click Apply.
    6. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this.
    7. Click OK.
    8. Restart the computer and follow the instructions in the next section to turn on System Restore.

To turn on Windows XP System Restore:
    1. Click Start.
    2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the System Restore tab.
    4. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives. "
    5. Click Apply, and then click OK
    6. Make a new restore point. And name it.

Let me know if that works.
