I keep getting notices that Windows XP Service Pack 3 is ready for download.
I know there was a Beta edition last Fall but has anyone downloaded and used SP3 yet? Everything appears OK for me with SP2 that I hesitate to move onto SP3..... what are the thoughts of list members ? please

The current offering of Service Pack 3 for XP is called a Release Candidate. This more or less means 'we think we got it right and ready, but someone please install this and tell us what goes wrong'... There has been a few issues with it by some.
For myself, I am going to wait for the final release, then install it. If all goes well, I'll then slipstream my XP installation disk with it and do a clean install of XP. Then find out what updates are available for it .

I have installed it on my crash-dummy system and I had no problems with the install.

I notice a slight increase in speed of explorer windows opening when browsing the files. It's nothing to write home about and you'll only notice it the first couple time, then it becomes the new standard in your memory.

It scrambled the order of my links on the IE6 browser tool bar but I had that backed up with a .reg file and reset it easily.

It added a shortcut to the All Programs menu for Outlook Express which I immediately deleted as I did the one before that. I have one pinned to the start menu, as I prefer.

That's all I have noticed up to now. If anyone has a specific problem that they have heard of, let me know and I'll see what gives.

windowsxp-kb936929-sp3-x86-enu.exe takes 15 minutes to download at cable speed of 3 megs.

    Get it here.

I have been running SP 3 for the past 3-4 weeks with no issues. Can't say that any speed increase is noticeable, but as surferdude points out if it's there it is the norm after a couple of runs.
