I have a client running an older compaq server with Win 200 Server on it. The issues seem to have originally stemmed from running out of disk space, but now I have so many issues I am thinking of scrapping this server.

There are not many files that can be deleted to restore space, log files are all in check, no large virus definitions cache, they are not running exchange so no mail boxes to empty.

My plan was to remove Veritas Backup Exec from the system drive to a storage drive that has a little more space available, but when I try to uninstall I get an error saying "Unable to locate/process internal binary resource. Contact your software vendor." Upon searching this error I found taht this generally happens when you do not have admin privledges. I am logged in with the administrator account so I do not see how this is possible.

There are 11 MB left of free space on the system (c:\) drive, and when I try to open any admin tools (ie active directory, event viewer, device manager) I get "Disk is full" error. There are users who cannot login because of expired passwords and they are not allowed to create new ones due to what I am assuming is the disk full errors. DHCP has stopped working and I am being forced to manually config ip address info to get the workstations on the network.

I downloaded CCleaner and I watched it download (to a drive with space) and when I try to load it I get "not a valid win32 application" errors. When I look at the properties of the downloaded files they all show 0b. I attempted moving the temp internet folders to the drive with more space and tried downloading again and that did not help.

I tried to load it from my flash drive and the computer will not see the flash drive. I cannot open computer management to make sure there is no drive letter conflicts.

Also, symantec which seems to be recently updated and running does not seem to think a virus is an issue.

With all that said, does anyone know of anything that can be tried to avoid reinstalling the server OS or getting a new server completely (which I know they need to do)?

Thanks for any help in advance.

If it's a single drive you could remove the drive and copy the image to a bigger drive with something like Ghost.

So you feel it is possible that I am having all of these problems due to lack of drive space or do you feel there must be something else going on?

    Hi JMG

Absolutely all your problems are coming from the disk full issue. All versions of windows must have elbow room or you have issues. You may not have enough "elbow room" to even un-install programs. That is what is happening with CCleaner.

Does this Hard drive have other partitions? Or is there 2nd HD?
If there is another partition then you need to boot from a CD and run Partition magic or similar program to grow some space from the secondary partition.

If there is a 2nd Drive then the above will not work but you could move non essential Folder entrys in Program Files to this drive just to free some space to operate. These can be moved back later after fixed.

If no 2nd drive then move some files to a network share (move not copy).

If you have a 2nd drive or partition then move the Pagefile to one of those.

Make enough room and things will begin to work. Once they begin to work you should use deep cleaning to free up more space. I suggest ATF-Cleaner and EasyClean 20 in addition to the CCleaner you already have.

You said nothing else could be un-installed? Are you going by Add/Remove or have you also perused Program Files for programs that have no Add\remove entry.

Tell us about your HD and any specifics about my instructions above.

    Mike

Oh I forgot to mention that when a Server HD gets full the first thing it does is shut down DHCP. Then it starts to shut down other "Non Critical" services.
