    Hi Jack,

Make sure you have hidden files and folders showing, then check for the existence of the following files.

    C:\ntldr
    C:\ntdetect.com
    C:\boot.ini

  3. to hide this advert.

Open Local Disc C: and click Tools>Folder Options on the toolbar.
    Select the View tab.
Scroll down and uncheck 'Hide extensions for known file types' then click OK.
    Do you see boot.ini now?

Either install the Recovery Console then reboot to it, or boot to the Recovery Console using your XP cd and logon to the installed operating system. At the C:\Windows> command prompt, type fixboot and hit enter. Type Exit then hit enter and remove the disk upon restart to see if the computer will boot normally.

If it still does not boot, return to the Recovery Console and this time type chkdsk /r at the command prompt.

    Hey Dave

I tried both of those methods and I still get a Disk Boot Failier...

I ran FIXMBR and it said
"This computer appears to have a non-standard or invalid Master Boot Record "

I said "no" when it asked if I wanted to write a new MBR.
Should I try to write a new MBR???

    Hi Jack,

    Sorry about the late reply.

Odd that it's working properly again after a mere defrag, but hey, I'm happy for ya! :)

If the same behavior should happen to return, run the fixboot command again and answer Yes.
