I used to have a speaker/volume icon in taskbar.
If i click on speaker icon on desktop and open that window there is a block to check "place speaker volume in Taskbar "
I click it, then Apply ,then o.k , i have tried this many time rebooting and not rebooting, but still NO speaker/volume icon in Taskbar.
    Help needed

Maybe it's hidden. Right click your Start button and select Properties. Select the Taskbar tab and make sure that Hide inactive icons isn't checked.

Can be frustrating, can't it?

Try Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices. You mention a "desktop icon" I don't know that Windows can make a desktop icon for volume. Third party "audio managers" can make a desktop icon though. There is a difference between Windows volume control and the controls of the audio hardware manufacturer.

speaker icon in System tray(not taskbar)

Sorry about taskbar. i meant System tray by clock
there used to be a speaker icon there, where i could open it then turn volume up or down,or mute.
you stated " "You mention a "desktop icon" I don't know that Windows can make a desktop icon for volume. "
trust me, i have one on Desktop, but my sound is of until i need it, then the speaker icon in System Tray was handy..
Control Panel. sounds and audio devices doesn't do it either.

    VOLUME speaker icon

i went to Device Manager first. don't see an answer
Went to Add Remove programs, don't see it there either.
I like quiet, but occasionally i want to hear an online news video.
At present i have to close it, then turn volume on by Desktop Icon, then re-open video

    Speaker icon

This thread is at a Dead End as i do not have XP CD, only 4 or 5 "system Restore" Disks and probably no-one knows where it is on them...
All you Guru's efforts are appreciated. you may consider it closed, i consider it a "standoff" between man and machine.
This just makes me Hate XP more every day
I will use both 98 and XP " " LOVE 98SE/HATE XP" "(maybe i should make that my motto)

MIR11:There seems to be some confusion about which icon you want. There are two different ones. The one for sndvol32.dll looks like a vertical slider control. It can be sent to your Desktop and then dragged down into your QuickLaunch Bar if that's what you want. The one that looks like a speaker cone is sndrec32.dll. That's the one that's usually down near the clock. In my system, both files are in the same place, C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DLLCACHE. Take your pick.
