I'm trying to record some vinyl stereo albums using Audacity software. The signal coming from the stereo receiver is definitely stereo, not mono, all the way to the tips of the mini-plug that I thien plug into the blue port (line in) on my mainboard. But only the left channel is heard on the computer speakers (speakers which otherwise work okay for Windows sounds).

I pulled up the Volume Control, went to Properties, and selected Recording. I checked all boxes, and when it displays the Recording Control Panel, all devices are shown (Mono mix, Stereo Mix, Line In, CD Player, Microphone, Phone Line).

But the Stereo Mix is checked in the "Select" box. I tried to select Line In, and it won't allow it. I cannot get anything else to select. I tried rebooting the computer, no help. I know in the past I've been able to change the check before, so I'm guessing this is where the problem is.

I've checked Sound in the Control Panel, and it shows Realtek AC97 Audio (built in sound card) for both recording and playback.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

You have a Right and Left Channel cable comming out from the stereo...Are you converting it to a Y type adaptor and plugging into the soundcard? Might try the pink microhone jack...

Yes, I'm using a commercial cable with 2 RCA connectors going to a stereo mini-plug on the end.

I thought that plugging it into the microphone jack only gave mono. Did I misunderstand that?

Notwithstanding that, would the stereo jack in some way be preventing me from being able to select something other than "stereo mix" on the volume control/recording options?
