Hi folks, been hearing a bit about something called Threatfire (here) recently and how it offers more advanced protection than some of the better known alternatives i.e. Superantispyware, Spyware Terminator etc. It is also mean't to be Heuristic as opposed to list based so I guess I am asking if anyone has bothered looking at it and if so, what is the general consensus?

    Olly.

I have first hand experience with Threatfire.

Let me be clear, Threatfire does not replace a good antivirus, antispyware, antispam program/suite. It is meant as a complimentary item.

Antivirus and antispyware programs are definition based applications, in that they can only detect something if a definition update gives it the capability to do so.

Threatfire is a behavioral based program. It monitors actions (such as reading and writing of files) to determine if the action is harmful. For example, Threatfire will warn if a program is trying to launch a browser, write or register files within the important parts of the OS, and many more things.

I think it's a great program that goes hand in hand with antivirus and antispyware programs.

For the record, I use SUPERAntispyware (the pro version) and I find it works well with Threatfire. Just make sure if you buy the pro version that you enable realtime protection. I also use Avira Antivir Personal Edition Classic as my antivirus and Clamwin as my second opinion antivirus (based on the open source clamAV antivirus engine).
