    Hi Windowsbbs,
    I have a similar problem to thread http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=70239 but my situation is slightly reversed.

    First Problem: I would like to transfer files (photos/music) from our main computer (running XP sp2) to my daughter’s new laptop running Vista Home.

    Our main computer running XP home with a wired router and Ethernet, I don’t use login passwords and the same with my daughter’s. It was noted in this thread that this could cause problems? Is that true for my situation?

    So far, I set-up a home network and used the network file (netsetup.exe) created, to set up the 2nd XP computer daughter’s old computer). I’m able to see the old computer & transfer files without a problem. How do I get the new laptop connected properly?

    What I have done so far;
    I have recently downloaded updates for Vista.
    On the Vista laptop, I changed the sharing of NETWORK Discovery, file sharing & public file sharing on.

    Another note, I can see my daughter’s laptop on the XP computer when searching , but I get popup saying Gabrielle-PC is not accessable.

    I found some answers on-line and in a book we just purchased called STEP BY STEP Windows Vista by MS, but when asked to use wizard to join a domain or workgroup, there is no Network ID button to click, can anyone help? This area seems to be absent.?

    I would appreciate some suggestions on solving these problems.
    regards, Mark

    Since you were refering to my post:

    My Vista machine's were already using a login that was password protected...Was having big time issues trying to connect to a new XP machine's shared files....(same issue either direction) Adding a password the the XP User cleared the issue right up...

    Course, both machines were members of the same workgroup and I had tripped checked the firewall on both machines to make sure file sharing was enabled etc..

    Here are a few things to try, some of which you may have already tried :-

    1. Set the Vista laptop to join the same workgroup, right-click Computer > Properties > Change Settings then change Computer Name and Workgroup Name

    2. To share a complete drive, right-click Computer > Manage > Storage > Disk Management then right-click the drive graphic > Properties > Security Tab > Edit > Add then type "˜Everyone’ (not the quotes) and below it select your preferences, e.g. Read or Full Control. Now Apply, OK, etc. to finish.

    3. To share a folder or file, right-click the folder/file > Properties > Security Tab > Edit > Add then type "˜Everyone’ (not the quotes) and below it select your preferences, e.g. Read or Full Control. Now Apply, OK, etc. to finish.

    4. If it’s still not sharing, make sure in Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center you have Network Discovery, File Sharing and Public Folder Sharing set to "˜on and, if you‘re not using passwords set’Password Protected Sharing to "˜off’.

    5. Windows firewall is normally set to allow file and printer sharing but if you have a third-party firewall make sure that it allows access so that each machine can talk to the other(s).

    Yes you MUST use a password with Vista. You dont need to on XP. :)

    1. I don’t like special characters in names but it‘s your choice.

    2. You type "˜Everyone’ in the box.

    And you don’t need a password as Everyone is specified. I don’t have passwords on any of my machines, i.e. XP, Vista and Server 2008 beta.

    This is hard going!

    1. Reread my original post. At your PhotoBucket stage you click Edit > Add then type in “Everyone” (not the quotes). YES, YOU TYPE THE WORD Everyone, YOU DON’T SELECT SYSTEM OR GABRIELLE, YOU TYPE Everyone, GET IT?

    2. The other poster interrupted by stating Vista needs passwords - it doesn’t.

    EDIT. I forgot to say, you can't mess anything up. You simply change anything that's wrong or doesn't work.

    Almost!

    Hi BurrWalnut
    I ran into a snag? I get a boot error as shown;
    http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s26/MarkHU_Photos/booterror.jpg
    After I click on continue I get the pop-up;
    An error occured while applying Security info to;
    c:\bootmgr
    access denied
    After I click on continue I get the another pop-up;
    An error occured while applying Security info to;
    c:\hiberfil.sys
    The process cannot access file because it is being used by another process.
    After I click on continue I get the another pop-up;
    An error occured while applying Security info to;
    c:\pagfile.sys
    The process cannot access file because it is being used by another process.
    After I click on continue I get the pop-up;
    An error occured while applying Security info to;
    c:\program files
    Access is denied.
    After I click on continue I get the pop-up;
    An error occured while applying Security info to;
    c:\windows
    Access is denied.

    I was able to set some permissions.
    I tried connecting from our main computer, it sees it, but no access.
    It lists the computer name and under the folder column says Home_mhu.
    I'm going to try to share a folder only? And reboot.
    regards Mark

    Trying to share folder option.

    Hi BurrWalnut,
    I also then tried to share one of my daughter's folders as you explained in step#3. It worked fine on the vista laptop, but then the xp computer could not see the computer at all?
    Stumped again.
    Not sure if we can get the two computers sharing?
    regards Mark.

    Trust me, it will work. Here are a few reminders :-

    1. The "˜denied’ errors you received were expected as you’re trying to share the system drive. It is not recommended that the system drive (usually C) is shared but if you have, say, a D partition or drive with music, videos, etc. on it that you want to share.

    2. I assume you don’t have a third-party firewall so make sure Windows firewall is on and that it allows File and Printer sharing. This applies to all machines.

    3. On the Vista machine make sure in Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center you have Network Discovery, File Sharing and Public Folder Sharing set to "˜on and, if you‘re not using passwords, set’Password Protected Sharing to "˜off’.

    4. On the XP machine(s) make sure the folders/files (or highest level folder) you are sharing have a little hand underneath their icon.

    5. I forgot to mention this one before. As you are sharing with a Vista machine, you may need to install the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder on the XP machine(s) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...1D-EE46-481E-BA11-37F485FA34EA&displaylang=en

    I don't know what is working and what's not working!

    What happens when you go to Start > My Network Places (Orb > Network in Vista), do the computers/folders/files appear?

    Check it out!

    Hi BurrWalnut,
    On the XP computer; My Network Places I see what should be shared, the shareddocs folder, and various files.

    On the vista laptop; under Network, I see Gabrielle-PC, Public folders, and Printers listed. When I tried accessing public folders I got a network error.
    So I hit the 'Identify Error' button.
    The responce was; Network Diagnostic pinged remote host 'Gabrielle-PC (ip adresses listed here) and did not recieve a responce. Windows found a problem that cannot be repaired automaticlly.

    I don't understand why its pinging itself? Is that normal? May a problem with my router?
    regards Mark

    I am pretty sure that your best way forward is to go all the way back to Steve's post (quoted above). That is, add a password to your XP account.
