A while ago my computer fried. I determined that it's either the CPU or the motherboard. I'm not sure which so I was going to replace both. I found a motherboard with the specs that I need, and I was thinking about trying to find an upgrade to my processor.

The specs on the new motherboard states that it supports AMD Athalon 64. The processor that I am looking at is the same socket, just AMD Athalon 64 X2. Will these two work together?

Hi and welcome to the BBS,

    X2 means it is a dual-core.

Go to website of the motherboard. Look up your model. There will be a CPU compatibility listing.

It may be possible that the X2 can be run, but with a BIOS upgrade.

You may need to reconcile models of the CPU. Motherboard manufacturers may generalise the compatible CPU's description (which I have come across before).

Having the same number of pins will not be a sign of compatibility.
