    Hi All,

    First time poster here...

My home computer has a problem with one of it's hard drives. Unfortunately the C drive.

When I run chkdsk it returns error information such as:

    C:\>chkdsk
The type of the file system is NTFS.
    Volume label is CDrive.

    WARNING! F parameter not specified.
    Running CHKDSK in read-only mode.

CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3)...
    File verification completed.
CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 3)...
Deleting index entry cdf662218.xml in index $I30 of file 236633.
Deleting index entry CDF662~1.XML in index $I30 of file 236633.
    Index verification completed.

Errors found. CHKDSK cannot continue in read-only mode.

So I run chkdsk /f and reboot so chkdsk can make error corrections. After chkdsk completes and Windows restarts I run chkdsk again and get similar (not exact) error messages. I've repeated this cycle about 8 times and I can't get a clean report from chkdsk!

I've booted with http://www.grc.com/spinrite.htm 6.0 and it locks up the PC as soon as I get to the SpinRite main menu.

What can I do at this point??

    TIA,

    Frank

    Hi, Welcome to WindowsBBS.

To answer your question: Probably not a whole lot.

I'd suggest you get the hard drive diagnostics tools from your hard drive manufacturer & run them to see if it is a problem with the hard drive.

I downloaded the Western Digital diagnostic tool set. The drive passes their "Extended Test ", but fails their "S.M.A.R.T." http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc...nBfc2VhcmNoX3RleHQ9c21hcnQ*&p_li=&p_topview=1 technology.

I can't seem to attach any images to this posting, so I'll include links to the SMART window screen shots:

    1 - http://www.prosoftds.com/Western Digital - Raptor - SMART 1 of 2.jpg
    2 - http://www.prosoftds.com/Western Digital - Raptor - SMART 2 of 2.jpg

I'm not sure how to interpret the data. I would think that the "Value" of 200 would also be recorded as the "Worst" value?

Western Digital is sending me a replacement. I have 30 days to send in my defective drive. The only cost to me is the shipping the bad drive back to WD.

As part of keeping me in the WD family they offer discounted upgrades to other WD disks. I took a look at a couple of them, and even with the WD discount, I could still get them cheaper at newegg.com? Go figure...

Yea, asking the manufacturer would have been my next advice.
