I just found a keystroke logger in a restore point. I did a full antispyware and antivirus scan and found nothing (after quarantining the logger). The restore point was a month old or so--so it must have been found and deleted from the system earlier.

It got me wondering--is there any way for such a program to continue to operate on my computer, from a restore point?

    Hi psaulm119

No, it will not run from a restore point...unless you do a system restore and it adds it back to your system.

I would run a on-line scan and see if anything shows.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on "Accept" If your pop "“up blocker blocks the ActiveX download, allow it, click on "Accept" again

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes or Install.
    • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
    • Now click on Scan Settings
    • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
      • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
      • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
        Scan Mail Bases
    • Click OK
    • Now under select a target to scan:
      • Select My Computer
    • This will program will start and scan your system.
    • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
    • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
      • Now click on the Save as Text button:
    • Save the file to your desktop.
    • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Post the log if it shows anything along with a HJT log and a Deckard System Scanner log.

If it's clean (and make sure it's clean) I would delete all system restore points and create a new one.

To set a new system restore point for your machine.
Set New System Restore Point Windows XP. - Set New System Restore Point Windows Vista

Thanks Geri. I was gonna use Norton, but I just followed your link and its going now.

I tried using my regular AV in safe mode (w/o networking), but couldn't get it to go at all. I tried looking just for a scanning engine shortcut, but couldn't find one. Oh well. Anyways, AVG antispyware says it is clean so if kaspersky says its clean too, I'll accept it at that.

My only other question will be: with a keystroke logger in a restore point, its likely that it was also on the system itself at some point. DOes this mean I ned to change all the secure passwords? If i deleted it as soon as it came up, the chances that it would get into a restore point are pretty slim, aren't they--which strongly implies that it was on my system for a while before being copied onto a restore point, which would then suggest I need to change my passwords. Do you follow my reasoning here?

You're telling me. It just hit 2% and it took 10 minutes. And I've got a 3 mb cable connection. :(

    Hi
    That's been a while,
Changing passwords with a non infected computer (not this one) just to be safe would be a good idea and keep a eye on your bank and credit card statements what ever you may have used on your computer.

Restore points are made quit often, You can see this by clicking on start>All programs>accessories> system tools> system restore.
Make sure Restore my computer to an earlier date is ticked and click next.

It will show you a calender, all the bolded dates are a new restore point.

Make sure you click CANCEL at that point and close the window.

LOL, Sometimes disabling your AV will help speed it up, But you would have to start over, stop the scan > disable AV and start the scan again.

If you do just don't do any surfing while you AV is disabled and remember to turn it back on.

Yeah I know they are made every 24 hours or so.

OK--I'd like your thoughts on my reasoning about the probabilty that this keystroke logger was on my system for a while before it passed into a restore point. I'm going to look at it when I get done with my online scan, but assuming it wasn't a false positive, I think its likely that indeed it was on my computer for a while.

    Hi
That is possible, sometime they hide themselves pretty well.

Lets see what Kaspersky says and you can always post a dss log also and I'll look it over.

Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe) and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges to complete the following.
    • Close all other windows before proceeding.
    • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
    • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy and then paste the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Just post the "main.txt" log only for now.

Hey you know what--a week ago or so I installed a key finder (like the Magic Jelly Bean key finder) so I could read a registration key for MS Office 2003. That very well might be the cause of this stuff.

Anyways, kaspersky's report was very hard for me to understand. It says that it "skipped" action on all the items that it found. Here is the report:

    Hi
OK because you downloaded this yourself, I don't believe you are being attacked.
But this needs to go, we do not approve of these programs on Windowsbbs. If you don't remove it then my help and support will have to stop here.

    ophcrack
    http://research.sunbelt-software.com/threatdisplay.aspx?name=PSWTool.Win32. PWDump.4&threatid=55363

    Now Open your FireFox browser.
    Click on tools
    Click on Options
    Click Advanced
    Click on the Network tab
    Under Cache click Clear Now.

    Please delete this folder.
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\MyStuff\Security\ophcrack-livecd-1.1.4.iso

Download and run ATF cleaner, make sure you also use the FireFox settings.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
      Under Main choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Please run the Kaspersky scan again and post the results.

    Thanks
    Geri

    Hi
    OK PM'ed you back. :)

This is what is being found so other then that there is no other signs of malware.
You can ignore the warnings from this because it was installed by you.

Geri, thanks. You know, I felt kind of silly when it dawned on me midway through the thread, but I still figured better safe than sorry.

And thanks for understanding. I pmed you so if there was an issue, the additional info wouldn't become public. That's all. Thanks again.
