I erased by recycle bin when I saw I had 11 gigs of files. When I tried to run manual defrag nothing happens.

I tried task manager and got an error that transaction support within the specfied file system resource manager not started or shut down due to error.

I am having a problem in trying to shut down windows vista. It keeps turning back on. I usually have to hit the ups power button to shut it down.

It may be because of a couple of programs I have that are not vista supported but appear to run well enough for me.

Any suggestions on how to get defrag working?

    Thanks
    Rose:rolleyes:

    Try the command line Rose:

Accessories > Command Prompt > right click > Run as administrator>

    enter defrag C:\ >Enter

If you want to know how badly it is fragmented type defrag C:\ -a
which will analyse the partition and report.

    manual defrag won't work

I tried all your commands with no success. When I right click I do not get a administrator to pick.

I went and checked my updates as they are all failing to install too. I followed a help screen and I'm listed as the administrator for windows vista home premium

    Windows Update error 8007000b

If you receive error 8007000b when you try to install Windows Vista updates, the Windows file system transaction log has become corrupted. The transaction log is used by the Windows file system to recover when a file error occurs. To correct this update error, you need to clear the log. Here's how:

To clear the file system transaction log
Click the Start button . In the Search box, type Command Prompt, and then, in the list of results, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as Administrator.

In the command prompt window, type fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\. (This assumes that C: is the drive in which Windows Vista is installed. If Windows is installed on another drive, change the drive letter accordingly.)

Help and Support search term: WindowsUpdate_8007000b
is the error I'm getting. it tells me to type command prompt and immediately I see Users\Rose. It tells me to right click command prompt and then click run as administrator - I do not get that phrase at all. I'm assuming it is that way because I'm a administrator.

I type in fsutil resource setautoreset true c:\ and the reply back is that fsutil utility requres that you have administrative privileges. If I'm the administrator and I don't get run as administrator when I right click at the command prompt - how do I resolve this problem?

    If I go cd \
to just get a c: prompt I right click and again I see no phrase that shows administrator the right click shows mark, paste, scroll, select all and find.

I tried all your suggestions and I kept getting the error that I need to run as administrator. Well if I don't see what do I do?

    Hi Rose,

Sorry to hear that. Have you tried using the 'Run' instead of the command prompt? You can use the same commands.
Other than that, the first thing I would try would be the sfc scannow command just to make sure that all the system folders are in place.

    vista won't shut down

I fixed the problem in getting updates installed by creating another user with standard account type in UCC.

    Now I'm receiving updates.

I still don't know if defrag is working yet or not but I have a more serious problem. Vista won't shut down. I have been reading different forums and many state it is a hardware issue. I then read that roxio software caused problems so I disabled that software and tried to restart and I was in shut down mode - would not come backup. I hit the power button to shut it off.

I read another post that said they fixed their problem by unplugging all usb connections to the computer. I will unplug the usb hub I have tonight and pull the usb plug for the wireless mouse and see what happens.

Any other thoughts out there about shutdown problems?

    Rose:confused:

We would need more information. Anything listed in your event logs that would seem to match with your attempts to shut down?

To open Event Viewer, go to Start > Run and type eventvwr.msc, click OK.

Check your System log (under Windows Logs) for errors.

You can double click on any error for more details, and there is also a button to copy the error to your clipboard for easy copying & pasting.

Here is the error from last night. I finally was able to defrag and the system was still running most of the night with defrag. When I checked it 6:00 am it was finished so I did a manual (unplug the electricity) to shut it down.

I have been trying to uninstall nero 7 right now as I read on one forum that it causes problems with shutdown. I can't tell what is wrong by these logs but I have many entry's listed for one day.

Does this help or is there something else that you need?

    Thanks
    Rose
