    I am using Win98SE and IE6.
    I have several problems:
    1) I type a URL in browser address bar and the URL "almost" appears and immediately I am put back to desktop.
    2) On most sites I get a small white square with a red X where a graphic should appear.

    a) I have emptied temp files and cookies....in fact, I usually do this at least once a day.
    b) I have "repaired" my IE6
    c) I have checked my ATI Rage Pro driver, it says working properly.
    d) I have even downloaded and installed the latest ATI/HP driver
    e) I went to View/folder Options/File types and edited URLs with long names: File Transfer Protocol; Gopher Protocol; Hypertext Transfer Protocol; and HyperText Transfer Protocol w/privacy
All long names now are: c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore
Is there anything else I ought to do? or undo?
    thanks in advance
    :(

How about your security settings in Internet Options? Try setting those to default.
Some sites require cookies. Set your Privacy option (in IE6) to Medium.
Go to the Advanced tab and click Defaults at the bottom.

Try renaming your "hosts" file to "hosts.bak ".

Any pop-up stoppers or cookie filters? What about firewalls?

I don't remember where the "hosts" file is located in 98, but it is hidden, so you will need to open My Computer, View, Folder Options, View and check all the "show" boxes and uncheck all the "hide" boxes and Apply in order to see everything.
The go to Start--> Find--> Files and folders and search for "hosts ". It is a file with no file ending. Right-click it in the search box and rename to "hosts.bak ". A new one will be made.
Try running without ZA to see if that improves anything.

"hosts" file is located in the C:\Windows directory in Win98. There is usually also a "hosts.sam" file there, this is a sample hosts file that comes with Win98, and does nothing. The real/active hosts file has NO extension, if in fact it even exists.

That's very true. I'm afraid I was thinking XP. Chances are there is no hosts file in 98.

    I definitely don't have a HOST file.
I did disable Zone Alarm .
I am still back where I started from and have done what I indicated in previous post.
    So..what could be wrong?

Do you have any (buggy) Norton software? Can you time the start of the problems to the installation of anything new? Registry cleaners?

I am becoming upset and frustrated....pls bear with me....
    1) scanned for viruses.... "clean "
    2) no entries in Restricted Zone
    3) Norton is disabled (I removed pgm from StartUp menu from Run/msconfig
    4) haven't downloaded anything new recently. I do have "Easy Clean ", installed more than a year ago, but never used it, since I am afraid to try
    5) disabled ZA
    6) tried to unnstall IE6 with Add/Remove. Not given that option, only to "repair" which I done several times
    7) can I try to install IE6 with Setup.exe over existing installation?
    8) I tried scanreg /restore from Command Line. Can only see 3 registry backup dates.....I probably need a date a month ago. How can I access a long-ago date, or is it impossible?

I forgot to mention that when I tried to get to a web-page, some king of notice popped up that I needed "java ".
I downloaded Java for Windows from Sun Microsystems. But it didn't do anything for me.

Some sites require Sun Java and others won't work without Micsosoft's Virtual Machine. You can still get v.3805 of the MS VM here:
    ftp://ftp.visualware.com/pub/java/msjavx86.exe
The Sun applet in the Control panel will allow you to turn off the plugin for Sun Java and use the MS version.

Yes, you can reinstall IE6 by running ie6setup. Not a bad idea.

I got v.3805 of the MS VM at:
    ftp://ftp.visualware.com/pub/java/msjavx86.exe as you suggested.
When I clicked the Sun applet in the Control panel to allow me to turn off the plugin for Sun Java and use the MS version, I get the following error message:
    Can't find registry key
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Java soft\Java Plug in\1.4.0_01
    So, I guess I can't turn off plug-in?

    I did a partial reinstall of IE6 by running ie6setup. I didm't touch OE6 though.
So, now I was able to access one of the web-sites that didn't let me up until now. However, on many other sites, I get in but the graphics show as a small white square with a RedX.
I guess we are part way there, and I certainly appreciate your help and patience.
How can I display the web-site graphics instead of the white squares with redX?

    A little progress, eh?
OK. I guess I would have done a complete reinstall, with every option checked except for the language ones at the end of the list (or only the language ones you use often). Reinstalling OE does not cause you to lose any mail or messages. Not that it would make a huge difference, just that a complete install may hit the problem since we don't know where it is.
It may be a good idea to uninstall the Sun Java. If it is not accessible from the Control Panel, it looks like something went wrong with the installation. You can always reinstall it later, and then we will have only the msjava to deal with (which should be reinstalled after you reinstall IE, of course).
If you go to the advanced options in the IE installer, you can specify a folder to download to and save all the installation files so you won't need to download them again (if you didn't know that).
Hopefully, missing Flash or Java is causing the missing graphics, but time will tell, I guess.
You can get the most recent version of Flash here:
    http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave...od_Version=ShockwaveFlash&P5_Language=English

Wish I had a magic answer for you. All I can do is try what I would try if I had the same problem.

You might also check the Tools--> Internet Options--> Advanced section to be sure "Show Pictures" is checked (a long shot ;) ).

I copied this from your post. Hit the download button and I got a small white square with the redX within a larger white rectangle. I can't download the Flash from this site......
(You can get the most recent version of Flash here:
    http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave...anguage=English)

Is there another site for this download?

I checked this and Show Pictures is indeed checked.....and has always been checked.

Just reread the thread from the beginning to see if something jumped out. Nothing in particular, except the long path names you put in File Types. There were no quotes around it the way you wrote it in the post. Those quotes should be there in the File Types, of course: "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe ". You probably just left the quotes out of the post.

Any added graphics programs that may be competing with IE for .gif files?

Yes, the long file names do have the quotes at either end.
No, I can't download MacroMedia Flash. I click the download link and then get a white rectangle, a small white square and a redX
I also clicked Default for the file associations: .gfa and .gif and .jtif and . jpe and .jpeg and .jpg
In IE/View/Encoding I selected Western European (Windows)
I rebooted and then again disabled ZA and Norton AV

Still no pix or gifs on a web page.

I'm sorry to make a "career" 4 U in trying to solve this problem.
Is there some way to "start over from scratch" ?
