    Hi Confused,

I don't think Netscape has used the term "Communicator" since version 4.8, but you'll find it towards the bottom of the page Broni provided a link for.

But, why use it at all? As both an email client and as a browser it's sadly outdated; Thunderbird has all of its features (as I recall) and then some, and is far more secure. And, Firefox is a far better browser than Navigator ever was.

    The Up-To-Date suite is Seamonkey

If you want to use a suite, as opposed to the FF/TBird stand alone combo, then SeaMonkey 1.1.7 is the ticket.

    I agree...SeaMonkey is the ticket...you'll barely notice a difference...at least, I didn't. Plus I kept my preferences, bookmarks, etc.

    Hi Confused,

SeaMonkey is a suite, as was Netscape Communicator, containing both browser and email client. If you use SeaMonkey, you don't need Thunderbird.

I used Communicator until it no longer handled my email properly, at which point I switched to Mozilla's stand-alone programs: Thunderbird for email, and Firefox (then named Phoenix, later Firebird) as my browser. I've been happy with both, and have never looked back.

Personally, I see no particular advantage to using a suite, but diff'rent strokes, I suppose. Firefox and Thunderbird are easy to install and offer many features (not the least of which is that if one crashes you don't lose the other, as happens with a suite).

    So0o0Confused,

You can download SeaMonkey 1.1.7 here: http://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/

It includes Mail, plus Composer for web page authoring. BTW, AOL has axed NN 9, and it will no longer be developed...

Aside the fact that Navigator 9 would not help, as it is browser only, is "ugliness" a reason for not using a program? One can try a number of Themes, if the appearance of a program is not satisfactory. The first test is, does it work?

To summarize:1.The old Communicator (NS4.8 and lower), Netscape 6/7, Mozilla, and Seamonkey (and Opera) are Suites, containing browser, mail, and more under one roof.
2.Firefox, Navigator, and Safari are browser only, like IE.
3.Thunderbird is mail only, like Outlook Express.
One needs a combination of two, listed in lines 2 and 3, to give browser+mail.
Item 1 programs are self-contained, and there is no reason to mix them.

Since you were comfortable with Communicator (as was I at one point), you will find SeaMonkey 1.1.7 to be your easiest switch. It's really a no-brainer. As others have said, SeaMonkey contains everything so there will be no need to add other programs. It's all integrated.
