I often take my laptop to work (Acer with Vista) and hook it up to the stereo and listen to XM . As of this week I can't get it to play . I select a station and it says "opening media" and then never plays - it just says "ready" . My coworker ran Regcure and it found over 700 registry problems . BTW he has the same laptop as I do and his did the same thing the first day mine did but now his plays music from XM . He says it was an ActiveX notification he was getting and I wasn't - this is what prompted him to run the Regcure . But Regcure wants $30 for me to use their service . I tried Spybot and got nowhere . Am I stuck using Regcure or is there something else I can do ? THANKS !

Assuming it's an issue that a registry cleaner can fix, there are plenty of registry cleaning programs out there, some a lot better than others - better in that they're less likely to cause problems (any registry change has the potential for unexpected consequences), better in fixing more problems and better in not reporting and trying to fix things that aren't a problem.

The advice is to always back up your registry before making any changes (or create a new restore point). Numerous magazines have run comparative reviews.

The one I use and like is jv16 Powertools from Macecraft - relatively inexpensive and has a free trial.

Steve , I realized I overlooked thanking you for your input on this matter . Sorry ! I did try this but she still won't play music from XM . Honestly , I've given up on it . I've already spent so much time nursing this laptop , even though it 's new , and I wish I'd never bought one at all . Not being a business person , I don't really need it but wanted to have it for when out on the road . Thanks:)

    Jim,

No problem about the delay in replying - almost everyone posts suggestions to help, not in order to receive thanks or win Brownie points.

There are some issues, when not vital, where it's probably best to give up. I only use a laptop - a docking station at home hooks it into my network, printers, full-size keyboard, mouse, screen, scanner and external drives. One PC, properly backed up, works better for me than trying to keep a desktop and laptop in sync (as I used to do). Even so, there were a couple of Sony apps on my latest one (a Vaio, needless to say) that just don't work. Sony suggest reinstalling (which hasn't worked) and restoring back to its original state (which is a definite no); neither app is vital and I actually have others that do the same job - once I realised the "preferred" apps weren't going to work for me, I decided it was easier to learn a new interface and move on.

I don't know what you are using to listen to XM (and I'm not sure quite what that is - I'm guessing it's a streamed radio station); my advice is to try a new program - there are plenty of options and a new install may get by teh current blockage.

Just a few more $0.01 worth...

XM is a satellite radio service like Sirius . Both of them are also available in Canada but I don't think they'll be going into Europe - perhaps you will have or have one called WordSpace maybe ? Anyway, I'm a subscriber to Sirius now for over 3 years and friend of mine to XM . I've always been able to listen to either on my laptop or desktop and never downloaded any specific player for it that I can remember - you just logon to their website and their own player would come up on a new screen after doing so . I'm not sure why , all of a sudden , it would stop working . It's not that big of a deal but I tend to keep revisiting these kinds of things until I fix them and I'd like to be able to listen to them when I do travel (which isn't much) . Thanks
